I have a 2005 Ford Escape with the basic AM/FM 6-disk changer (non mach) with no pre-amp outs on it. I want to keep the stock system and stock speakers.

Im just looking to get a little more volume from the system. I know I need an amp with "speaker-level inputs", What I do not know is 2 channel / 4 channel or what else is reqired so I can still use the sterios ballance and fade controls?

I know I should change everything, but right now that is not an option, Any suggestions on an spesific inexpencive amp? One small enough that I could tuck it up out of sight in the dash?

Thank you very much

Lenny

Chances of finding an amp small enough to go under the dash is going to be like pulling a rabbit out of a hat. More than likely this amp is headed for under a seat or behind a rear quarter panel. Do not use the basic crap built in high level adaptors, use a proper LOC like the Scosche SLC4. If you want to amplify all speakers in the vehilce, a four channel amp is the one that you are after. 30 - 50 w rms x 4 and a respectable amp is the one that you should be looking for. JBL may have a new small 4 channel amp for the budget conscious type of consumer.

Thank you!

I do have a JVC KS-AG214, four channel amplifier. Its kind of large 10" X 10" X 1" about 10 lbs. The specs are as follows: (All greek to me) Do you thik this will work for me? That is if I can find a place to mount it. Or do you think its to big and will destroy the factory speakers?

Thanks again, Lenny

Continues Power 40 watts per channel (4 channel)

Output into 4 ohms 20-20,000 hz at no more than 0.04 % T.H.D.

That amp will do fine...No way you'll blow the factory speakers unless you just crank the gains up.

Learn how to set your gains and you'll be good.

P.S.

You can never have too much power.

Yes actually you can. Too much power into too small of a heatsink (a voice coil former for example) results in SSS (smelly speaker syndrome). An amp makes the same amount of power no matter where the gain is set, low or high or somewhere inbetween. What you may find with this amp is that it is going to bring the speakers to life. That said, you need to be aware that the smaller factory speakers were just not designed to take a large amount of power. The good news is though that once you discover that setting the gain properly and keeping in mind that turning that volume dial up to a comfortable level might be alright, you might not need new speakers. The even better news is, the factory speakers just might die a horrible death and it provides a perfect and quantifiable reason to invest in some new and better sounding aftermarket speakers that can handle the output of the amplifier.

But...if you did have a huge 4 channel amp and even if the gain was turned down...the speakers would still be loud and clear but with the deck volume still relatively low...if you know what I'm saying.

So the smelly speaker syndrome would be only from overdriving the speakers correct?

Thanks everyone!posted_image

Now I have to see if I can find a place to mount it. I use every inch of the vehical for material I carry for work, thats why I was hoping to find somthing alot smaller that I can tuck in the dash, that way I wouldnt need to run alot of new wiring. Im guessing if I use this amp im going to have to run a new heavy wire for the feed? maybe not? oppinions? Can you point me to a link on how to ajust the gain?

Im going to post on over on the buy / forum, I have a disk changer maybe I could swap that and this amp.

Wow, an afull lot of questons for a newbee, sorry.... Thanks again Lenny

You don't need new huge wiring...16 gauge will work fine.
