This question is for someone familliar with a range of alpine head units. What head unit sounds better the older CDA-9815 or the newer CDA-9831? I also own a CDA-7995 and I think it sounds better than both players. I also prefer the 9815 over the 9831 soundwise. Any input would be appreciated.

I think the older alpine units sound better. I like the pure sound of my 7903. I'm not into all the new HU with the sound processing features. I guess I'm stuck on old skool car audio.

There is a world of difference between an Alpine with just a number for the model number, be it a 5 (IIRC) or 7 series and any Alpine with a alphanumeric model number. Don't confuse any alphanumeric modeled Alpine with the words old skool as that is not even close to a proper realization of what old skool Alpine truly was.

i use to own a CDA-7893 and i loved it till it got stolen.....now i have a CDA-9833 and im not quite impressed with the sound quailty. to me on the newer ones there is just WAY to many options to adjust the sound.

The 9861 is a bit of a comeback with the 24 bit DAC and 4 volt outs, but as Rob said it's not even close. I think after the 7840 series, it was all down hill from there.

The older models seem to outweigh the newer ones. I just assumed with the proper adjustments these newer units would outdo the older ones,  but I was wrong. Thanks for all the input.

I've had a 9811 and now a 9813 I have looked at the newer alpines just bc of the ipod feature but have been not been too impressed with the newer ones unless its the nice dvd-audio player but i think the 9813 is better than most of the newer ones, most of the newer ones only have 2 volt outputs

Amen to that, brother!

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

I used a 7977 for many years and I liked what it for what it was, although it sounded tinny in comparison to my eclipse... I suppose that's what I get for using a 1 bit DAC in a hu.

I used to own about 5 different 7xxx series deck during the late 80's and early 90's and I've brought this up before on these forums..... Alpine was the shiznit back them with much higher quality components and better quality sounding HU. They are but a shadow of what they used to be now. Even when they re-released the 7909 with the copper chassis, it still wasn't what it used to be like, now you have a copper chassis that will heat up like a son of a gun....

I've been the Alpine route. Hearing a friend's old Alpine system, I was just completely in awe with the quality. I decided that when I upgrade my system, its going to be alpine all the way. I then got a 4 channel amp, subwoofer amp (MRD 500), speakers ,HU etc, basically everything Alpine, including the subwoofer box. You can read it here:

It was a complete disaster for me. That is when I learnt that Alpine is no more what it used to be.

I disagree, i-personalize is a joke for HU without a monitor. If you have a monitor, you can download some pretty cool wallpaper, but for anything else, its worthless. Adjusting crossover frequencys and time correction is better, in my opinion, from the HU. You can hear what you do on the spot. Doing it from i-personalize you load it in, if you dont like it, you have to burn a new CD and try it again. Waste of time! I do agree that certain Alpines by far exceed any other.

I still have my old 7903 .. Still think it is the best SQ cd player available,  The new units have alot of bells & whistles but seem to not have the Sound Quality of the older units.

Just my 1/2 cent...

Over the years alpine had always been good for me.  I have used several HU in the early 90s..... well, ok the whole decade.  Sorry to hear they have gone downhill.  Hopefully they well revive themselves and get back to what they once were.  What are the primary reasons for this?

i dont know about all the features and do dads on the new alpines but all the ones ive seen are harder to use than my 7894.   call me lazy but my 7894 is easy to use, sounds great, and dosent have a bunch of bells and whistles that i cant even figure out how to turn on let alone use.

Nothing beats the Alpine 3500 series.I have 3 amps older than many installers. You can not beat bi-polar outputs. The old DIN plugs tend to be a pain.Toshiba outputs have always been trouble free.I must admit the new Tri-path chips have mind bending sound.Take your money out of  Worst  Buy and invest in Tri-path.

Mos-fet,j-fet,v-fet,not in my car or home!Bi-polar rules, till Tri-path gets the bugs out.
