hey guys, whats up...Gotta question for ya so here goes

Is it true that the bigger the box the deeper the bass. Now im not talking about a 50ft box is going to make my heart bump out of my chest but just a little larger box might help? I kno its not that simple cause there are formula's and everything to make a box thats why im here. I want to make a box that will fit 4 or even 6 6 1/2's (havent decided yet) and a 10 or 12 " sub. Now im not going down the SPL route Im going for strickly SQ. i want HQ speakers and a deep deep sub. So im looking at the box having the speakers on the side and the sub in the middle.. can i have the sub without and enclosement inside the box? should i have the sub enclosed in the box? also..its not safe to have the amps inside the box cause of no air correct? can i face the amps inside? If my sub is enclosed in the box i can have the wires run out the box but if i have the amp not enclosed in the box then i cant let the wires run out due to the fact that air is geting in and out.. and thats not right?

anywayz i dont want to confuse you guys anymore cause im confused just listening..this is the first step so i can change and im going to change alot of things from your responses... I'd appreciate any feedback you guys can give me.. and any ideas you guys got im totally open to them... thanx for your time guys

Ok I will give this a shot. First, have your sub in an enclosed chamber (to itself). Second, do not mount your amp inside the box, mount it on the outside ( depending on the size of the amp etc. you will want steady air flow moving over the heatsink taking the heat away. You are correct about the different boxes, look at your manufactures recommended box size. Depending on what kind of music you listen to may influence this choice as well. A properly ported box (larger) will likely give you a little deeper bass than a sealed box. You can get deep bass out of a sealed box but may need to put more power to it. If you look on here you can find a box/port calculator that should assist you.

For example I had a 10" sony explode in a sealed box with a 250w ( RMS) amp....my midrange hit deeper than it. So I kept the same amp and sub but put it in a ported box and got some decent bass out of it. Then I got good subs and gave the Sony away! ( no offence to Sony guys)

First, I would say start off by typing in correct English...well somewhat I guess. And try to use capitalization and spacing where needed.

It's hard to reply to a post that confuses you.

Also yes you can have the wires going through the box...Just make sure to seal up the hole caulk or silicon.

Nope not true at all. Too large of a box will result in the amplifier losing control of the motion of the driver, end result is bass that sounds like a wet fart. Why do you want to put so many 6.5" speakers back there? Read the what is a proper sub box sticky first. Then come back to the table with some new questions.

"Why do you want to put so many 6.5" speakers back there?" I want more highs. I want to hear alot of sound from speakers and just a little from the subs.as my previous setup i had more bass then anything so im trying to flip it. Also because im on a street team for a few of the underground/indie scene and i pull up to concerts and shows and play the music and have anyone that likes it to come check it out.. Thats my biggest concern so my previous setup had 200watts from speakers i would like about 400-500. I Will hardly be inside the car but about 10-15 feet away.

As for your "what is a proper sub box" sticky. Great stuff saved it and printed it out for future reference. That shows me what kind of boxes there are and to how to make them. But imma Newb i don't know which box to make. Maybe im missing something..thats why im here to learn...sorry if im slow.

If you want more highs than why don't you put like a couple 10 inch full range speakers in the back on a 2 channel amp...Should be loud enough to be heard over the subs.

I was just wondering maybe im missing something but all the big speakers i find are 8 ohm and most car amps are 4 ohm. If this is correct, can i or can't i use a 4ohm amp with a 8 ohm speaker?

If they are 8 ohm speakers, then odds are that they are for home audio.

Where are you looking?

Posted By: zhalverson
Date Posted: June 26, 2006 at 8:16 PM

Amps aren't 4 ohm amps.  That is just the load they are rated at.  If an amp can safely play at 4 ohms and then it can play at 8 ohms.  There will just be less power produced due to the higher resistance.

Personally I think you are going about it wrong with adding a large number of speakers instead of going with less speakers of high quality, powered properly with an amplifier, and installed properly.  My 2 cents.

luckydevil, yeah they are home speakers.

Zhalverson, Appreciate the 2 cents as a matter of fact if you were in my position what kinds of speakers would you get and why those?

I have 4 6.5 inch 3-way lightning audio speakers in the doors of my truck (4 door blazer) playing at 2 ohms on one side of a 900 watt dual-channel amp, with 2 8 inch subs on the other side, and my highs are rediculously loud and clear. With the box/sub combo i have my subs already hit as hard as some of the 10s i've heard in other vehicles, and the highs easily drown out the subs.

Toby, if you step outside your car..how far can u still hear it? 15-20?...also wouldn't a component system be clearer?

lol n/p man thanx for ur reply

Component speaker is a car audio speaker matched for optimal sound quality. Typically a pair of tweeters and mid-bass drivers are matched with a crossover to limit the frequency range each speaker must accurately reproduce. Component speakers drivers are physicaly separated so the tweeter, which is very directional, can be placed in an optimal position, usually on the dash facing the listener, while the larger mid-bass driver can be placed where there is room, often in the lower front of the car doors. Component speaker pairs are offered by all of the high-end audio manufacturers.osition, usually on the dash facing the listener, while the larger mid-bass driver can be placed where there is room, often in the lower front of the car doors. Not all of them are home speakers...Most are just 8 ohms cuz thats just the way they are. Also most have a very high effiency rating so a ton of power is not needed to get loud.

You could just a pair 8-12 inch 8 ohm speakers and parallel them and brigde it to a 2 channel amp and have crazy mids and highs.

Basically a component system just separate speakers for custom placement and a crossover network for assigned frequency ranges per speaker.

hmm.. interesting... thats sounds like the best way to go.. get 2 either 10in or 12in speakers and just use that.  Next step...anyone got any fav or know of any speakers i can put it.. Anyone try and and pleased with results? so should i take my interiors speakers out so i dont have 2 different types of speakers or is that okay?

thanx for the reply.

Its okay to keep your interior speakers in...you'll just have some major rear fill instead of a bright front soundstage...but whatever sounds good to you.

I'm putting a couple of 10 inch full range speakers in the back of my explorer as well to listen to music for tailgate parties and other doodie like that.

I'm gettin a couple of these.
https://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=264-332

But just look around and see what you like or what falls into your price range...for decent full range you want something that'll go higher than about 4500-5000hz.

yeah exactly..tailgate parties.. and stuff like that... let me know when you get them and how they sound..i'd apprecaite that..also now thats a 8ohm speaker... now lets say an amp is 500watts 4ohm..will it be like 250 watts 8ohm? will it be like 400watts? whats the exchange between them? What kind of box are you putting you speakers in?

I don't really know what kinda box ima put them in yet. Gonna use WinISD maybe...Prolly just put em in a simple sealed box though for ease.

Yes these are 8 ohm speakers of I'm gonna have TWO of them for a paralleled resistance of 4 ohms. Couple that with a 2 channel amp bridged and your set to go. But I'll first just hook each up to a channel. These speakers have a VERY high efficiency rating so tons of power isn't going to be needed for loud music. 150 watts rms power handling and 98 db at 1W/1m is probably going to be pretty loud.

But if an amp is rated at 500 watts bridged at 4 ohms than it is 250 watts/channel @ 2 ohms...at 4 ohms the power output will be halved to 125 watts/channel.

For these speakers I'm probably only gonna push them with about 100 watts rms each.

I'll order a couple after I get paid in about 2 weeks. I'll post up again on how it all sounds.

Peace.

Nevermind what I told you earlier.  I didn't realized your setup was more for outside listening.  I don't know much about that so I can't really make a good recommendation.  All I know is you're going to need some deep-cycle batteries if you want to play loud music for any amount of time with the car off.  Good luck.

yeah that was one of the next steps i wanna take.. didn't want to get to much ahead of myself but now that u mentiond it. why not bring it up =) anyways i've seen red yellow and blue top batteries. im guessing that has alot to do with it and a blue top is the top of the line one correct? what should i be looking for when i look for a battery? because its a deep cycle battery my alternator won't get its hair pulled right?

thanx for the replies guys..Greatly Appreciated.

Blue top is a deep cycle for marine use but will work for car installation also.

Either the yello or blue top will work...I already have a deep cycle battery installed.

Also thats why I chose these speaker because of the high effiency so I don't need a huge amp to power them. Smaller amp means pulling less amperage = longer play time and no dead battery.

Deep cycle batteries won't kill your alternator...I have a Duralast deep cycle battery and it handles everything right now like a champ. My Duralast yellow top has more CCA than my friends Optima yellow top haha...he was wized when he found this out cuz he thought he was the doodie with an Optima yellow top.

Kinetik, Optima, or Duralast (mine baby whoo whoo) will work.

Also, Zhalverson, I will probably just leave this future setup of the pair of 10 inch full ranges in the back of my explorer just to listen to some really loud music haha...Can you say overpowering rear fill?

If it sounds good than I'll keep it in.

Okay another question, I've seen some nice speakers but they are 16ohm. Now if its a 16 ohm speaker and i have a 400rms amp that puts out 400rms @4 ohms.. does this speaker only push 100rms?

In theory that amplifier will put out 100 watts at a 16 ohm load. Speakers do not push any wattage.

Are you looking for speakers to be used primarily for tailgating? Do you want something you can set up outside of your vehicle? Or are you looking for something to be mounted in the rear of your vehicle that will be audible outside of the vehicle. BTW, what year, make, and model vehicle do you have?

basically..somthing to be mounted in the rear that you can hear outside...

I'm planning on making a box that i can transport between vehicles..right now i have a 92 jeep but i will be geting a trailblazer within the next month. so i was thinking about making a box and putting the amps and everything on the box so when i get my new suv. i can just unwire the wires and take the box.

thanx for replies..

Well partsexpress is the main site that I look for raw speakers like the ones we are talking about.

In-wall and ceiling speakers could work...try it out and see.

Even if you get a 16 ohm speaker it should still get pretty loud if the effiency is high...The speakers I'm getting have an effiency of 98db @1w/1m so if givin 100 watts they would get kinda loud.

I mean have you ever hear a 100 guitar amp playing? It's quite loud even outside.

I am also going to make a box that is easy to take in an out so I can play music at tailgate parties and doodie like that. I'll prolly make it out of fiberglass so it weighs a little less lol.

Oh yeah I forgot to say that those three brands your asking about are all good. They make some great speakers.
