Subject: Where to place my 12" subs?
Date Posted: July 02, 2006 at 2:24 PM

I have a 95 Ford Explorer XLT and I just bought 2 Pioneer TS-W306C 12" subs that total 1000w each/ 2000w total. I was thinking about placing the subs behind my rear seats with an amp but don't know how to go about doing it and I don't know if it will sound great.  Heres how my rear seat looks and what I want to do:posted_image

Sure, you can do that.  Is there enough room behind the seats so the required enclosures will fit?

Theres more than enough room. I can put 4 subs if I wanted to but I don't know how to even start waht I want to do. Do I need to open m seats up and place plywood in there for support? All the wires that are need for the system are hooked up as I had 2 10" MTX subs in a box before but I wanted to upgrade and save space at the same time. Any help is appreciated.

Wait a minute, wait a minute.  Are you trying to mount woofers INSIDE your seats, or to the backs of them, without using an enclosure?  No, I can't recommend doing that.  You will still need the "box."

Why would I need the box? The reason I wanted to mount them on the seats is to save space by having them enclosed in the seats. Would they sound bad without a box? I seen it done before in a truck as well.

It is a very very bad idea.  Read the owners manual for your subs.  They require enclosures (ported, I believe.)  You need the "box" to protect the speakers from over excursion and to generate desired bass response.

If you want to save space and still have a little rubmle in your trunk MTX has a loaded stealth box with a 10 inch woofer that would get the job done. I haven't seen any boxes that can fit a 12 inch sub but maybe you can make a custom box of your own to do what you need it to do. If you mount the current subs in the back of you will not be pleased with the results and it will damage your subs. I hope this helps.

I had 2 10" MTX before in my truck and I have seen this stealth box but its only one sub so I may just have to place my subs in a box.

I know you already have your subs but if you really want to save some space you could try the new pioneer shallow mound subs. The mounting depth is only about 4 inches for a 12. The manufacture recomends a .5 to 1.0 cubic ft box. You could tuck 2 or even 3 of these up against the back of your seat and not take up that much cargo space. Check them out at www.pioneerelectronics.com. The model number TS-SW3041D

I will take a look at the subs. I was thinking about making my own enclosure out of fiber glass. I never did it before but I think I can learn. Any inputs? I was reading this guide and I may just do it. https://chris.pfharlock.com/glass/index.htm

That guide was truly the thing that made me really want to do my own project. It was almost the same thing I had in mind but with 2 of my subs. I truly appreciate the help and I will keep you updated. I will start buying the materials little by little. I had nothing in my truck before I bought it and little by little I have been adding more things. I have a flip down 12 inch lcd tv, a xbox, and now I look forward to this project. Thanks DYohn for the input on the guide.

fiberglass is your best bet for something trick, there are alot of pre-fab boxes out there that are great and would suffice for a quick install, but if you want the looks and the feel of something custom....DIY

What's the whole list of materials that I need to do my own fiber glass enclosure? I get paid today and I may go and buy some materials.
