i just want to pick somebodys brains, i've just installed a set of infinity 5010s into my friends 03 renault clio without an amp, he has a sony mex 1gp gigapanel which i thought would be fine, i used the existing wire to the doors but run a fresh set for the tweeters that go straight to xover, now they played fine for 10 mins then started chipping out (tweeters only), i thought this was strange more than likely the head unit, so i picked up a cheap amp (sony 50 watt rms) rewired everything running a new set of wires for the input on xovers and tried again- and now i have no sound coming from tweeters, this was late last night so i haven't gotten around to testing the xovers and tweeters individually, can anybody see a problem already?? if its dodgy tweeters or xovers how can it be both?? cheers ------------- scottlock

Many of the new Infinity speakers are actually rated at 2 ohms, not 4. This could be your problem- check and see. If so, time for some different speakers.

The infinity is not a 2 ohm speaker, its a 4 ohm. As for the problem with the tweeters being out, is it possible you have the wires reversed on the crossovers, do the drivers sound as they should? Its possible for it to be the tweeters or the crossovers. I would hook the tweeter up to the factory wire with the volume low and see if they work than proceed to trouble shoot from there ------------- double-secret reverse-osmosis speaker-cone-induced high-level interference distortion, Its a killer

cheers peeps thanks for you input, i finally got around to having a look today and the xovers seem fine but both tweeters are dead???? i hooked up an old set of standard vdub tweeters to the xovers and they play fine, i've sent him back to the shop to have them replaced but i am confused i cant understand how two tweeters could be faulty, i have double, treble and quadruple checked the wiring, and between wiring to the head unit and then the amp they have only ever gone through the xovers so how could they blow??? ps the mids play fine ------------- scottlock

Since there are two tweeters and two crossovers in question, it's not likely that either is at fault. The fault would lie in the source unit. Playing the deck far past its clipping level could likely have burnt the tweeters out.

ya, there is no tweeter protection circuit built into those crossovers so he may very well be right

I just wanna say thanks for everything, my mate got his replacement tweeters today without charge but the shop did say the old ones were blown but the fact that my mate did turn the set right up when first installed could explain it, but i think it worked out as he is happy that he invested in the sony amp, and it sounds excellent, cheers everyone ------------- scottlock
