My question is this: will running mid-range speakers from a D661s component set off of my head-unit (alpine cda-9857) harm the speakers or the head-unit? I talked to a tech rep from diamond and he said that the speakers wouldn't be damaged, but that the head-unit would be. The max power for the cd player is 50 watts, and the nominal power for the speakers is 100 watts. I'm just using the woofers for rear fill, I didn't want to use 2-ways version because I don't want the extra treble. The rest of the component set I'm using to fill out the parts of my 3-way component set that just got ripped-off. Thanks for any advice!

What resistance are the speakers? If to low like say 2 ohm it may damage the head unit or it will just clip the head units internal amp.

IMO I don't think you'll be pushing enough power from your head unit. Max 50 watts probably gives you a good 18-22watts RMS. Not much power to push the mids. My advise would be to make sure that your front stage is setup properly, you may find that you don't need the rear fill (unless you really need it for the people in the back seats). I'll take good front stage over rear fill any day.

Here's what is on the diamond web site:

Type: Component
Size: 6.5 in.inch Mid 1 in.inch Tweet
Power Handling NOM/MAX: 100/200 watts
Sensitivity (2.83V/1m): 90.6 dB SPL
Freq. Response: 45-22
Mounting Depth/Diameter: 2.7 in. / 5.8 in.

I'm not sure what the resistance is on them. But right now I have just the woofer attached to the head-unit, no cross-over or anything, and there doesn't seem to be any distortion or clipping.

if there hoked up and playing fine more than likely the are 4 ohm voice coils, which will be no problem.

I believe they are 4ohm. While you will not damage them, you arent really getting your money's worth without an amp.

Those are great sounding speakers! Take them to their potential!

thanks for all the replys. I just finished putting in the rest of my system today and I think it sounds awesome. I realize that the speakers are underpowered, but they are doing exactly what I want, adding a little mid/bass. I have a jeep and where the sound bar is positioned what ever you have in there is screaming in your ear. I have a hex-series 3-way set in the front, the woofers from the d6 set in the sound bar. I think having them underpowered perfects the sound stage nicely in the wrangler and keeps the sound up front. I highly recommend this set-up for people with jeeps. Also, just to let you know I have a JL 12w6v2 in the trunk and the 3-ways and the sub are running off of PPI amps. Thanks again for the help!!!

allright, at the risk of looking like an ass, I got into my car this morning and my stereo won't work. It just squeals and pops out of the left channel, even out of the speakers that are amped seperately. I'm going to pull it apart to see if any connections have come loose, but I don't think any have. Any ideas on what happened? It was working perfectly when I shut it off last night.
