I installed a dual din radio in the mentioned vehicle and turns out that not just the radio functions from the steering wheel are lost, but also the trip functions right next to the mode button ( what do instrument cluster functions have to do with the radio!?!?). I figured perhaps radio relocation should correct this, but could there be a different way? The radio installed was the new AVIC-Z1 and the VSS wire was tagged at the radio harness. Could that have anything to do also? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Relocation is probably your best option if you want to keep the trip functions. If you only care about the audio functions, you can get an steering wheel interface to tackle those. There are several makers: PAC, Peripheral, Scosche, etc.
