I'm coming into a bit of cash and want to purchase amps for my two RF T112D4 subs. I was looking at two of the MTX TA5601 amps. I was also possibly looking at the LJ 1000/1 as well (I don't think I could spring for the Eclipse DA7232...it's a bit too far out of my range.). I was also looking into the Alpine MRD-M605s as well.

Edit --- Also considering two of the Eclipse XA4000s.

I guess I like the MTX and JLs because of the parametric adjustment capability.

MTX have a high THD rating. You are better off with the eclipse amps. MTX amps are good for subs, not so much for door speakers.

If the MTX will fit better into your budget, go with them.

killer - don't place too much stock in THD numbers, especially in car audio.

all i can say is that i went from a MTX 564 with a THD of 1.2% to an eclipse XA4000 which has less than .05% THD and the improvement was phenominal.

Maybe.  But it wasn't due to the THD numbers.

First, even in very controlled home environments you'd have to have great (read:  extraordinary) ears to pick out 1.2% THD from 0.05% THD.

Second, you likely don't have great (read: extraordinary) ears.

Third, your speakers and the "room" that is your car cabin exhibit and cause non-linearities and distortions orders of magnitude greater than any you'll find on even crap electronics.  The assertion that you can attribute an extra 1% to a different amplifier is quite dubious.

Fourth, once the motor starts running, THD numbers under, hell, 5%, likely fly out the window and are rendered null in 99/100 vehicles.

Don't get me wrong, I like nice stuff.  And you're right, Eclipse generally makes nicer stuff than MTX.  However, I don't want to see any new members be misled into buying an amplifier for a THD number.  Which, in my opinion, is one of the most useless numbers in car audio electronics.

Personally i have been through several amps for my subs from jbl to profile and pioneer and for me the one i like the most which i currently have is the alpine i have the older model of the version you stated above and it has been problem free and i abuse it everyday. it is a great amp especially at 2ohm. just make sure whatever amp you pick give it the proper gauge for power wire and ground or you will lose power. also i found my amp had better power and response once i installed a capacitor for it. i usually use 4 gauge wire for power and ground hope this helps

My money is on the MRX stuff because they have the built in fans into all the amplifiers which is a huge deal if venting is an issue in your installation. I have heard and seen many amps in my neck of the woods shut down due to thermal protection kicking in because of lack of air space.

Hopefully you mean the MTX stuff [:)]

That's where I'm leaning towards. Next week I'll pull the trigger on the purchase.

Thanks everyone.

I don't really like the lower end MTX stuff, but never had a problem with them. Subs were good.

But like kfr01 said, do what is in your budget unless it is a really low end piece of equipment then save your money for something better. You will be better in the long run.
