The best idea is to keep your ground wire as short as possible. The vehicle chassis is a far better to ground to provided you do it correctly. Make sure that the ground wire is the same gauge as the power wire and that you terminate it correctly. Screw or bolt the ground to an area of the chassis that is clean and bare metal. Don't go through a section of the body that the other side is exposed to the outside. It will corrode over time and ruin your ground connection. Attach it to a thick piece of metal. Don't use any existing bolts or grounds. Use your own dedicated connection and you shouldn't have any problems. A good idea is to use an area of steel that has a double layer of steel body panels welded togehter.
