i saw the post on speaker wire and thought to myself "what gauge is overkill?"

i have an image dynamics idmax12 with about 800w rms to it and am wondering what guage would be the best match for the wire from the amp to the subs.

i'm currently using 8awg but have seen some videos of more power running through less wire, so i'm wondering if i'm just being silly by using such big guage.

i'm also wondering if theres some rule of thumb when it comes to the actual speaker wire. i know roughly the power that power/ground wire should be and am wondering if this also goes for the speaker wire itself.

thanks

See the speaker wire calculator on bcae1's page:

https://www.bcae1.com/wire.htm

As you can see, 8 awg for speaker wire is quite silly.

At 800w, 5 feet of wire, and 4 ohms, the SPL difference between 8awg and 16awg is 0.08 db.

You'd never hear this difference in a million years!
