hi, i have a quick question: would it be a good idea to connect the "remote" wire from my amp to reciever thru a switch? sometimes i would like to be able to shut off the amp and subs.

Yeah, just dont chince on it. Get a GOOD quality switch. I had so many mistakes of getting inexpensive switches for other misc. accessories on my previous vehicles. Not worth it to try and save a few bucks.

ok, great. so opening the remote wire would power down the amp right? no power usage

You are likely to get a bad turn off/on thump if you use the switch while the radio is on and playing. Turn the radio off before using switch.

That will also depend on the amp too. If you have one that has a internal surge suppressor, then no pop.

This is simply wrong information. ANYBODY will always tell you your amplifiers should always be turned off first, and turned on last. You will NOT get a thump from any decent amplifier. If you have no thump now, you won't have one later.

i installed the switch, and it works great. just picked one up at a local shop and made it open the 'remote' circuit to my amp. thanks for the info.
