Over powered amplifier?

I am currently running a 1200 Watt Sony Xplod Amp. along with a 3 Farad Audiobahn Capacitor Bank. I have no known problems yet with running it at an average speed in town( 35-40 mph), but when running at upward speeds of 50 + it does cut in and out as if it were overheating. Can someone help to explain to me why this is so? If you must know the specifics, email me and I will get back to you at a later time with them. Thanks...

If your voltage regulator is defective, it could be over-volting... I'd have your alternator checked out, IN THE CAR. Do it at a real automotive electrical shop or the dealer, not Pep Boys or some loser place like that...

...and then once you get your electrical system fixed, ditch the caps.

You don't have to ditch the cap. But if you do get rid of it, replace it with a 1.5+ Farad cap. ------------- Never send your ducks to eagle school.

Ok...Im getting that I need to have my electrical system checked out, quite possibly it is the alternator, but how does getting rid of the cap have anything to do with it?...I believe it the problem my be with the amp itself....I never had my capacitor hooked up until recently and this problem has been occuring off and on for years, on many different vechiles: almost everytime I have the system installed, either by myself or professionally. btw.....if im not mistaken. you are supposed to have 1 farad for every 500 watts of power.... I have read several times that having more than enough does not hurt anything.... Although having a 1.5 farad cap might work....and I have heard stories that it does...I just prefer to be safe than sorry...

Adding capacitors to an already overloaded or defective electrical system will only make things worse. Follow the advice above and get your electrical system checked out first. Then come back and tell us if you find any problems there. ------------- Support the12volt.com

I also say it's your electical system. I've had that problem; $750 later.....problem solved! Also, there's a decent chance it might be your ground, make sure it's a clean connection.
