What method to most remote controls use to communicated with the head unit?  Infrared, Radio frequency?  What would be the best way to relocate the head unit to the trunk and still control it from the drivers seat?

thanks,

Todd

Most remotes use infared. You could use some sort of IR repeater. I know they are available for home use. You could also make a cable connection for the faceplate and control it like that. It's going to be hard to change CD's with the HU in the trunk though.

Why in the world would you want the HU in the trunk?
In any case, it would be running alot of wires in to the trunk in the first place. It can be done, but lots of work. Maybe more info. would help. Make? Model? Type of stereo?

I'm glad someone asked this question, because lately I've become interested in doing the exact same thing. I've had three head units and 2 amplifiers stolen in the past, the last setup fairly recently. I'm tired of having my car broken into. I wanted to upgrade my alarm with a piezo siren and camera, but I'm in law school and don't have any cash right now. I'd prefer the thieves just couldn't see the stereo at all.

Does anyone know where I can get an IR repeater that would allow the remote to control the HU? I don't think changing discs would be an issue for me, because I use DVD and CD mp3 discs, which hold anywhere from 8 - 30 albums. As far as running the wires, it wouldn't be much different than wiring a regular harness, just with a longer set of wires.

I would think that after your first radio being stollen, you would buy a detachable face deck, or better yet, an advanced alarm system. If those thieves can get in your car, what makes you think they will not pop your trunk?

They were all detacheable face decks. I got complacent, and stopped taking the face off after I moved to nice neighborhood. I don't think a thief will reasonably assume the receiver is in the trunk, and it'll be easier to secure the equipment there.

Sounds like a great way to get your butt sued to me. Most marine stereos now are available with wired flush mount full function remotes. You might look in that direction.

Regarding the metal strapping, many stereos now come with that metal bar that can be bolted to a secure point in the dash. My concern is that a thief might tear up my dash trying to yank the stereo out. Is that a valid concern?

I think thats a very valid concern. When a thief tries to steal a radio out of your car and can not get it, many will puposefully destroy your vehicle because you "wasted thier time", I know this from having to replace my dash. Also to anyone considering strapping razor blades to thier car stereo, beware not only may you get sued but you may be charged with assault with a deadly weapon if your lucky or if they completely bleed out, manslaughter, dont know about you dj customz but my radio isnt worth me going to jail for. Please stop giving dumb advice. thanks

I wouldn't recommend that razor stuff to any body. It would work but I don't think its worth it. I had had to work on peoples cars that were like "yeah yeah it ain't easy is it? can't nobody take that out" then i'm like yeah so now you got to pay more for making my job harder. The hassel isnt worth it. If you don't do sloppy things with your car the chance is less. Exp. Get an alarm, a good one! Probably not "a good price" on ebay.  Let people see you arm and disarm it. Lets people know you have one. Don't park your car places to "test your alarm". Park public places, well lit. To rap it up something I say over and over, stop showing off. I love systems and love to hear them but so does a theif. Don't blast your music on the way to work an turn it off when you get out the car to park your car for 8 1/2 hours out of site. Turn it off before you get to where you are going to leave it for extended periods. Oh! an take the faceplate out. Not in the glove box either, out of the car, or the trunk. Most theives have seen you before. You probably have talked to them about your car

All remote controls used for our purposes should be RF. unless indoors, Infra red is not very effective as the sun emits truck loads of infra red and will interfere.

You can use repeaters if in any outdoor situation where you wish to convert IR to RF.

At least thats what I do for any marine applications...never had this question posed upon me dealing with road vehicles.

Hope I helped
