Please help.  My sister has a K reg Ford Fiesta Tourismo.  Upon removing the stereo i found a four wire plug which i found was the ignition 12v live, two wires for the positive ends of the front speakers and one wire for the negative of the speakers.  Also on the back is the aerial lead and the ground, screwed to the back of the stereo.

I have bought a new stereo which i know works.  I bought a generic connector, and wired the two reds together and the black from the connector to the wire which was screwed into the back of the last stereo.  However it does not power the stereo.  There is approx 13v running through the red wires to the stereo (multimeter tested).  None of the fuses are blown.  Why does the beast not work, have tested the stereo on my 306. works fine

Most new stereos have two power leads, a switched (red) and a constant (yellow). Make sure both are hooked up. If the vehicle has no constant at the radio harness, you can run your own. Be sure to use a fuse.

i know that the yellow basically runs constantly enabling the stereo to store radio settings etc.  But surely the stereo should power up with just the 12v ignition and ground wire attached.  does the illumination wire play some part, bearing in mind the car does not have this wire.

You need both wires. Many times you will experience problems such as being able to eject a cd, but the unit will not power on. The reason is because only one of these wires is getting power. Connect them together temporarily and see.

No, you don't have to worry about the illumination wire. All it does is dim the display a predetermined amount when the parking lights are on. If you want this feature, just run a wire from the parking lights.

As stated before you need to hook up both the wires, the constant and the switched.    when I had my festiva I taped the needd lead off the steering colum.

Also make sure you get the correct harness for this car, or else it will be a headache!    This car uses a common grounding system in the speakers.

Sorry for the delay in trying out the solutions have to work crappy hours as a postman.

Managed a quick ten mins in the car today.  Tried just connecting the 12v permanent and switched to the ignition wire and starting the car to see if the stereo would power up.  no joy.  Will run a dedicated permanent wire this sunday to the stereo.  fingers crossed

Also what is a  harness?  Looked it up on the website glossary, no joy

Ditto what nouse wrote. If you've fed 12 volts to both wires and the unit's not turning on, try hooking it straight to the battery to make sure the problem's not in your wiring. Constant and switched to the positive terminal, ground to negative. If it still won't switch on, and the fuses are good, your unit is bad.
