where to run power wire on ’99 Grand Prix

Hi, i was just wondering if anyone who owns or has owned a '99 grand prix might have a good idea where to run a power cable through the firewall for an amp. Any ideas would be appreciated. I also had another question. Is a 1000w amp and 2 400w subs a large enough system to put a 1 farad cap in it? i already have one i got for really cheap, but i've heard of caps causing more problems than help. Any ideas?

A cap is a waste of money. Make sure you use the right size power wire and upgrade the big 3 (read sticky called upgrading the big 3). As far as where to put the power wire look around for a rubber grommet on the firewall you could safely put it through, (one that dosen't have wire already running through it). If not, you can get a step drill bit and run it through the firewall in a size to fit a grommet and wire through on the same side as your battery , make sure you know where your drilling through so you will not damage any wires. also if you want you can post the brand and specifications and someone or me can reccomend the size of wire you will need.

i wouldnt waste your time with caps, its only 1k watts and most cars can support this.

There is a rubber grommet to the left of the steering column. It has a cable running through it already. The grommet is partially obscured by a steel brace attached to the firewall.

well, thanks for the advice guys, as long as u guys think a 99 grand prix can handle a 1000w system without a cap, then i'll prolly just end up selling it to a friend or something. o and sparkie, is there anyway u could be more specific in how u got ur wire through that grommet? do u just take the steel brace off, run it, then put the brace back or what?

o yeah, and since i already have the cap, should i just go ahead and hook it up with the system and replace the big 3 or just sell it? thanks again

you don't have to remove the brace just string the wire by it. Sell the cap and upgrade the big 3 you'll be happy.

You should try to pull the grommet out of the firewall from inside and slide it rearwards along the cable going through it. Then cut a small hole in it to puch the 4 gauge through and feed the wire through the firewall. Re-seat the grommet to prevent water leaks. The steel brace is in the way a bit, but you don't need to remove it. Be warned that the edges of any steel are probably very sharp. Avoid stretching the wires tight against them and have a few band aids handy just in case.

Generaly on this platform (lesabre, regals,montes etc...) I take a piece of 1/4" split loom and put it over the edge of the brace its cheap insurance.. I should have included that tidbit in my other post, its been crazy since the snow came to town...............

There is actually a rubber edging on the top of this bracket from the factory to keep the cable safe, but it is always a good idea to improve on it.
