so what's with many companies not making hi preout voltage decks? Alpine for the most part uses 2 volts, even the Pioneer AVIC-N3 is 2 volt preout. am I missing something? I know electronics have advanced but is 4-5 volts really needed anymore? is 2 volts all that is needed nowadays?

High pre-out voltages are never required unless you have very long cable runs from your HU to your amps, or you are competing and trying to squeeze every last fractional db from a system, or your installation is partuclarly noisy.  2-volt preouts have been the industry standard for many years.
