Here is a circuit that will cost about 10 bucks and will help you find unknown speaker wires in a car.

It is an Audio Generator or otherwise known as an Audio Oscillator.

It just puts out a simple tone so you can find the speaker wires.

The Transistors I used were out of an old car stereo in the scrap pile and my cost was nothing.

You can use the same Circuit as a Continuity tester for wires and fuses, etc. by rearranging the wires.

what about amplified systems? wouldn't your 12volt battery or this continuity tester toast the amp?

Not if you use two 1.5 volt batteries instead of the 9 volt.

An amplified system will accept up to about 3 volts without dammage. But, the amp is not on when the hot lead or remote is not connected. You can use a capacitor of 1uF on the output as isolation if you are really concerned with this.
