it doesn't really matter. there will be little if any audible difference. it's basically just for looks. if you're doing a push/pull, be sure to wire one out of phase.

so it does not matter if i do it even to a sealed box?  cause i wanna add 2 more 12" on each side of my trunk and flip the subs around.. with my sealed boxes

As long as all of the subs are moving in the same direction at the same time, it won't matter. All of the subs must be in phase relative to the listening area...not necessarily with the direction they are pointing. In other words, all of the subs need to be pushing out away from the box at the same time.

Inverting the subs will increase the enclosure size tho, which may or may not be a bad thing. Check your box dimensions before you commit to it.

Most woofers won't give you more than .1 cubic feet. My RF T1's as big as they are only take up .085 cubic feet. Many times when space is an issue anyway, the sub is more of a space taker when mounted inverted.

as far as i've always been told you will lose 3db when inverting subs. I have run boxes for weeks with the subs normally to get to know the sound and then inverted them and didn't notice any difference in sound. I have never had the set-ups metered to see if there was an actual db drop though. by the way how do you like the MOFO's.

Yeah, there is absolutely no loss of volume from inverting the sub. Unless of course it was wired incorrectly. Also, the sub may only be .1 cubic feet, but you also gain more air space because of the bowl of the cone extending beyond the box. With the tiny box sizes these days, .15 cubic feet can make a big difference in sound (usually better).

What is normal anyway???

The space the inverted cone takes up is added into the displacement number...EVERYTHING below the gasket is accounted for...

Blowing up in a car accident doesnt worry me, as long as I'm putting out some major dB's when I die...

You don't understand. It is accounted for if you are considering the rear of the sub to be on the inside of the box, however, when magnet is mounted on the outside of the box, the subwoofer now takes up negative space (flat piston subs excluded) due to the fact that the cone is now a dome. A dome that has air space. Not alot granted, but something to be considered (especially with a deep inverted dustcap sub). It can be as much as... .05 cu. ft. (on a 12" sub) like I stated. So, you're taking out the space consumed by the sub & you're adding the space of the new dome over the mounting hole & you get about .15 ish cu. ft. extra space.

yes, inverting a sub will add very little to the internal volume of a box. in most cases, anywhere from 0.06-0.09. not alot, but can make a small difference, usually not audiable though.

I like facing the subwoofers towards my neighbors. And also I enjoy a 50% stuffing..I use stovetop.
