car sub’s at home

Ok, well im already expecting to get flamed for asking but im going to do it anyway because i need an answer.
I have an MTX 9500 and i would like to use it in my home stereo.. What do i need. There are no good receivers that have a sub out. I was told that i would need to just tap off one of the speaker lines and use some sort of amplifier??
Any ideas?

There are plenty of recievers that have sub out. what kind are you trying to use, and yes you will need to go from the sub out and find a home amp that runs on home power and is big enough to get it moving, or that has enough power for your liking. but i had one customer who used a 12w6v2d4 and it worked out so good for him he came back just to tell me about it. but there is only one way to figure out if its going to work for you and i think that you know how that is. try it

Keep in mind that home equipment is usually meant to drive 8 ohm speakers, that's the norm. Any good amp will have no trouble with a 4ohm car sub, just check before you BBQ a receiver.

Yeah, the problem with running a car sub at home isn't the subwoofer, but the amplification. Partexpress.com has quite a few subwoofer amplifiers & they are about the best prices around (for new that is). Using a car amp in a house is almost more trouble than it's worth, because you need a very high current capable AC/DC power supply.

keep in mind also that HT sub enclosures are usually tuned lower than 30Hz. Somewhere around 20-25Hz...So make sure if you are going to use it for home theater, and tune it that low, that your subs Fs is not below the tuning frequency. Ive found that TC Sounds subs are great for home theater. I Have two 12" TC-1000's in my living room in seperate ported enclosures, and they sound phenomenal...

Blowing up in a car accident doesnt worry me, as long as I'm putting out some major dB's when I die...

to get back to the original question, you'll need a pretty powerful AC to DC power converter. the small ones like you can get at radio shack probably won't cut it. when you turn up the volume, a small cheap converter will shut down. also, if played hard for long periods of time, most average consumer converters will go into thermal protection from being over driven. take everyones advice and go with a good quality home receiver. the one dyohn posted is a good choice.

Buying an car amp and a stout power supply would cost way more then just buying the home amp Dyohn stated

Using a car stereo amplifier in the house is never a recommended solution.  In fact, it can be very dangerous and much more expensive to do correctly (cost of power supply) than simply using an amp designed to operate off of house voltage.  Speakers are speakers and can be used anywhere for any purpose as long as the system is properly designed.  Electronics are a completely different issue.

i misread the post. for some reason i thought it was about car amps. but agreed, speakers are speakers, as long as the system is set up properly, it shouldn't matter.
