It's about time to change my battery OEM battery and I was thinking of getting an Optima. Now, I am confused on which one to get. My car is a 96 chevy monte carlo LS and has stock alt. I only have 1 amp (RF 500/2) 1 farad cap, Aftermarket HU, and a radar detector. I never run my stereo with the car turned off because i am affraid to drain the battery so with that said. Should I go with the red or yellow?
so the yellow top is adequate for just starting the car and running normally.
You need the red top if it is going to serve as your main battery. The yellow top is designed as a deep-cycle battery (to discharge and charge over and over). The red top is designed with a higher Cold-cranking-amps to start your car stronger, but not as a deep-cycle battery. If you are never going to run your stereo with the car off, you need the red top.
Most people put a red-top to serve as their main battery and then, if you plan to run with your car off, put a yellow-top in the trunk with an isolator installed between them. This allows you to run your system without draining your main battery.
You need the red top. It is a stronger battery.
