Hey guys I need some advice. I have a 2002 Eclipse GT Spyder convertible. I had some cheap 12" subs in the trunk, which the trunk is pretty small may I add. I also had a cheap spl meter. I tried the subs facing 2 different directions - (1) facing UP towards the trunk lid & (2) facing towards the rear. I figured each would be similar since either way they'd be firing towards a wall. Strange result though - the spl was exactly the same for BOTH directions. HOWEVER when they were facing the rear they actually had slightly more impact, ie felt slightly harder and also they sounded a little cleaner. I assumed maybe this was because the rear wall is pretty solid for the sound waves to bounce off, and when facing up, the trunk lid would move very slightly which maybe killed some sound waves. Am I correct in assuming this? I also got new subs and I want to get the best possible sound / impact out of them. I was going to face them toward the rear of course after my 1st experiment but I wondered this - How would they sound if I got 2 SEPERATE boxes and faced them away from each other, or I should say each box facing out away from one another with subs facing the rear quarter panels? I know I could just try and see but I'd hate to buy more boxes when someone with experience could just help...

face them to the rear. my friend did the same thing your thinking about, he took his two subwoofers and built each its own box. he says they are louder but he has a dub and a poineer so mine sound alot better and i cant tell. just stick with what you got.

In general, facing the subs toward the rear usually gives the best results. I would recommend not facing them away from each other as the further apart the subs are the more likely you would experience cancellation. Keep the box simple, solid, and tight...then face them towards the rear of the car, as close to the rear of the car as you can. The page above gets a bit technical...but basically it states that the sound directly from the woofer and the sound from the woofer bouncing off of the back need to be as close as possible to avoid the cancellation that causes the loss of spl.
