Topic: 15in SPL sub

Posted By: hurtado_roberto
Subject: 15in SPL sub
Date Posted: December 10, 2006 at 10:43 PM

I'm looking for a single 15" or 12" subwoofer for high SPL and some SQ.  I'm planning on building a ported box and I don't want to take up a lot of trunk space so I'm looking for a single woofer.

My amp outputs 800RMS at 4ohms bridged but it's not operating at full capacity right now since my alternator only outputs 70amps.  An alt replacement is soon to come.

I'm looking for at a price range of $150-250.  I'm currently devating between two RF subs; the P215s8 and the P315D2.  I want to go with the P2 because WinISD does not show a considerable SPL difference between the two.

If you want more SPL at lower volume you should pick a subwoofer with a higher SPL value at 1W right.

not a whole lot of power there or great impedence to pick. cerwin vega V-max,quantum audio QC will both work nicly. if ur looking for spl the quantum qcsvc4 15 has a xmax of 21mm and is rated for 1krms. they get loud and sound ok doing it and will no problem fit ur price range. look me up SPLaudio78@hotmail.com

For the power you have I would recomend the Kicker L5 12 or 15

We just installed a 12" L5 in a durango this last weekend, and it was being powered by a Kicker zr600 (600WRMS@4OHM)

It was capable of hitting 143.6db @ 45hz with a completly streetable setup.

I have never heard them... so i wouldn't recommend them. I would agree with Jeff get an L5

another question lol. ive heard an L5 and it was nice, but how much better is an L7. say the 12 inch models powering them fully in the same box?

Posted By: jeffchilcott

for the new 06' l7's I would put less then 1000 to them

with 800 I would really go with an L5

jeff how much louder is an L7 then an L5?

Posted By: jeffchilcott
Date Posted: December 13, 2006 at 4:18 PM
depends on box and power.     on lower power the l5's will be louder approx 1000 and lower the L5's will be louder.

1000 up per sub the L7 will start to show.

I only noticed a gain using the L7s when I was getting over 1500 per sub...then I was starting to have issues with the L5's holding up for long peroids of time

The L7's I run normally at 3300 per woofer, and thats on 10's

Just remember I only give my equipment a 2 second burst then its done.

For street use right now I have a single ZX1500 running on 18 volt at 1 ohm....No you cannot run these amps this way out of the box, I had to special order mine from kicker, but That runs about 1100 per woofer for street use

The reason everybody puts up Dayton, is because they are EXCEPTIONAL quality woofers for the money. I have used (Gen1) Titanic 12's in my home system for about 10 years, now, powered by an Adcom GFA555, rated 450WPC, and I beat the HELL out of them.

Give them a try, I'm willing to bet you will be very impressed and surprised!

i kinda took over this thread from that other guy lol. but yeah i am buying a 91 toyota cilica gt and want to put subs in it. im selling my old subs to help pay for this car because i wanted something louder for local comps. was looking at kickers just because i know they are good and LOUD!! at first since im low on cash and cant buy the whole system i want one sub and one amp. I DONT WANT CRAP. i was looking at one 12" L7 and an amp that can really push em. later i want to buy the same setup so i have two 12" subs. then upgrade the altinator when i get the other sub and amp. im looking to hit at least 145 db hopefully with the one and a lil more when i get the second. i was going to go out and buy an audiopipe 12" and amp to prove that it would be almost impossible to hit 149.9 db like that one guy lol. but yeah any ideas on amp or even other subs would be great.

jonathancullen, here is a very good affordable setup, that will get you going

(1) KX1200.1
Kicker 12" L5

I will garantee you can do 145db with that setup, unless your talking DB drag then it might be a little tough

But for any other organization I know it can do 145db

If you end up getting 2 subs with a 1200.1 I know of a box, that is capable of high 148-149 on one amp and nearly 152-153db on 2 1200's

I would point you in that direction, I have had exceptional luck with every kicker product I have laid my hands on.   If you have any more questions reguarding thier hear or boxes and setup, feel free to contact me via PM. or if you would like, if you PM me I will send you a phone # to reach me at

I think I'm going to go with the kicker S15L5.

How does this sub compare to the RF P3 line, like the P315D2, assuming a rms of around 600w?

The rockfords will definately have more SQ, but theyre not gonna pound like that L5 will....

If you've got 800watts ive got a 15" TC Sounds TC-2000 that Ill sell you for $200...That subs has great SQ and pounds like no other...

ur scores are wayyy of if ur talking legal on the dash because that is the only score that matters.  1 L5 12 and 1200rms would have to be a great install but could happen.

2 12s and 2 1200 doing a 52-53 out of a trunk u must have some magic because last i checked 153.? was the loudest trunk in the world and that was alot more power. ..

Before you dig yourself into the hole DjsCustoms did, go and do your research on me.   I will be found all over in the usaci fourms, and state record boards.   I also have scores from this years finals.

Dont worry to much I will be in DB drag next year as well. I can go legal, not a problem.

Can You?

So, now that you have called me out, who are you?   What class do you run?

This explains SO much about our society today... so much. A teenager, still in highschool, drinking with his parents. At least he's not out on the roads trying to kill somebody.

Frankly I go home and get hammered with the family, but we are all of age, and we enjoy gettin a little roudy.

Its quite funny to see my parents drunk but im sure they think the same thing of me.

But same rule, no one drives anywhere...better safe then sorry

just a quick question off topic of getting hammered with our parents...
since the Kicker L7 and L5 are sqaure rather then round like most sub..
wont that be a problem? maybe with disortion or power?

My understanding is that the distortion is higher than with a round sub. I cannot say how much higher, but it certainly makes perfect sense to me that it would be higher distrtion...

haemphyst is right, they do have a unique sound to them, you can make them clean with good power, and the proper enclosure...but generally they are not as clean as a high quality round sub.

If your looking for more loud then Sound quality...Squares

If your looking for SQ over Loud then round.

Most people I have done installs for with the Squares have not noticed the Sound Quality diffence because they have never owned a true SQ woofer....Eclipse, Adrie, focal, ect ect

Those woofers I have owned and I can notice a diffrence, but I am so used to the squares now, and had enough time working with the boxes that I dont mind the diffrence in sound

jeff do you use your l7 setup for daily driving also? just wondering, cuz even hitting 155db everywhere you go it hella loud. i want my setup do get loud when i want it to, ideal i would like to drive with it around 130-140(i know big difference in numbers, depends what kind of day it is) and would like to max at more then 150. hopefully, thats what i want. i dont really care about nice sound quality from the sub, im getting nice speakers. right now i have jl which are really nice but im planning on getting eclipse.
