rca’s which have ground

Hi all,

I was wondering when you say that your RCA has a ground, does it mean it has a wire coming out of it or do you solder a wire from it?
If it's the wire coming out, where do u ground it? (HU & Amp?)

If it's the soldering case, could you tell me how to do it please.

The "grond" on an RCA is the shield. No wires, no connections. Once plugged into a component, the shield is a "ground" potential, or zero volts.

I have MonsterXLN interconnects. There is a wire coming from one end that Monster says to ground with your HU ground. It supposedly reduces noise. I am assuming this wire is tied into each of the channels negative wire? I don't know if this is what your talking about, but that's what I have.

if there is any noise, using a small wire like the one you have to ground the head unit to the amp may reduce noise

Thats why some RCAs have a really small gauge wire inbetween the rcas...many people think is is for a remote line...they are wrong..it is to ground the deck to the amp.

Anyways on 90% of amps the signal and remote inputs are on opposite sides

Yeah, my MonsterXLN do have the one wire for grounding at the HU. Some cheapos (Raptor, I think)I have, have the one wire down the center. In all the ads i've seen for these, the manufacturers say it's for the remote turn-on. This is used for grounding even though Raptor says it's for remote? -Also, to use this as a remote wire will add distortion? -And, why would it be used to ground the HU to the amp if both are grounded properly in the first place, to reduce distortion in the interconnects?

jmelton, not sure why you think using the center wire on a set of RCA cables would cause distortion. This is not true. If it did anything it might (if you were using a very cheap pair of RCA cables and probably an unclean ground) add some noise, but would not CAUSE distortion.

It's called a drain wire (for additional noise suppression) ie. grounding, most use it for a turn on. (not recomended) It's wild...they talk about keeping your audio cables away from your 12v ..... what is a turn on? 12 volts correct?

Yeah, it doesn't make sense to run the 12v remote along with the RCA's, even though the cable companies say this is for remote. -I need to rerun my RCA's and ground this wire (not talking about XLN's)! And you're right, aznboi, this wire is a bitch to strip, i had to cut it down like 10 times. It kept snapping! Oops I did mean add noise not to create distortion. My B.
