trying to connect my alpine headunit to my laptop so i can play all the songs off it through my car stereo...

I'm using a alpine cda-9827 headunit has 3 preouts and i've connected my laptop to the front speaker output(ie Auz- i hope...)

No, you will want to connect the laptop's OUTPUT to the head unit's AUX INPUT.  The HU pre-outs are intended to drive external amplifiers.

By the way, sometimes using battery powered sources like a laptop can create horrible ground loop hum that is very difficult, if not impossible, to eliminate.
