polk audio

 I have a 2007 suzuki sx4. I upgraded the stock speakers to the component set from polk audio , db 6500. 100 watts rms ;fq 40hz-23khz ; sens 92db; imped 4ohm. pretty standard data from the speakers .. stock speakers were like 25 watts... The componenet set i got has 2 6.5" speakers and 2 1" "tweeters" and 2 crossovers. I installed everything per specs and it sounds okay, but I am not quite satisfied. I feel like $200 mids should have a little bit more bass, although i am not expecting sub woofer quality. It just seems like compared to factory I am missing something. In the store * cc * the speakers sounded "punchier" like the bass hit a little more. I am considering getting 2 polk audio carbon series c400.4 amps ... I believe the rms on those are 75x4 with a built in crossover. The Polk audio page shows that amp being hooked up to a similar setup as the component set I have now. Is this a good idea? should I go for it? I currently have a stock head unit since there isn't a dash kit out in the states for my car yet. I know that if I want serious bass I should get subs so please don't flame me about that. Thanks for taking your time to read my very long and drawn out scenario.

the more clean power you send to the speakers the better they will sound, adding an aftermarket amp to your speakers will make even stock speakers sound tons better. i have never heard polk amps so i cannot tell you thier perfomance but im sure they will make them sound tons better.

Aftermarket speakers with a factory head almost always produce less bass than OEM speakers.  Factory speakers are designed to be bass-heavy since most people think that more bass = good.  Polk is now owned by Directed so Polk branded amps should be decent mid-grade equipment, but not as good as they would have been before the buy-out.  I agree, a good amp will help the system, but the only way to get excellent sound is to replace the factory head unit.

thanks both of you... i am waiting on getting the money for a double din dvd headunit and someone to make the bezel for it to sit in. 

another question for this.... should i leave the speakers hooked to the crossover they came with even when i have them amped?

youll always want to use the suplied crossovers for your speakers, especialy with an amp.  Ive heard the plk amps a few times and was impressed.  Once you put an amp on the speakers youll hear a big difference in performance.  Were the speakers at CC powered by an amp when you heard them?

The speakers were hooked up to an amp at CC. I am looking in to getting a panasonic double din dvd player. With that would I still need to get an amp? I heard that the pre amp outs from an after market head unit would make it sound better. Any thoughts? I know it won't be the same as an amp. I guess I am pretty much a noob when it comes to component speakers. I've run subs and built boxes and had decent bass but now that I am getting older it's more about quality of sound not trunk rattle. Thanks for the help guys and please keep the comments comming.
