Hello all,

I haven't been on the forum for a couple of years or so, and haven't updated my signature yet either. I now have a 2004 BMW 325ci and I'm builing a new system from scratch. I have been out of the loop for a while, so I'm looking for recommendations on a new Head Unit. I would like to go with Alpine, Pioneer or Eclipse, and am looking for mp3 playback capability. I'd like to keep the price below $400. I'm into SQ first and foremost. Being able to easily hook up an ipod or other mp3 player would be essential as well. I've been looking at the Alpine 9857. What are your thoughts on that model?

Thanks everyone.

Old school Nakamichi, high-end Clarion also come to mind.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

Awesome...I'm thinking of going with the 9857 I think. Are the Eclipse decks still top notch? I notice that circuit city sells them now, so I wasn't sure if they were on the way down.

i have always had very good luck with pioneer/premier:and all the new bluetooth capabilities are pretty hot features.  i used to love eclipse head units, but i can't think of one of them that didn't have at least one problem.  everyone i know has moved on to something else- maybe they have improved, but i am still wary.

Eclipse still makes top notch equipment. There are deals to be had right now as the line is changing to the new models.

ok....I think I've settled on an Alpine. However, the 9857 does not have a variable color display. It has a blue display which contrasts with the red guages in the BMW. I can live with it if I have to, but It would be nice to get a deck that I could match to the color of my dash. Does Alpine make a good model that has this capability?

The Pioneer P880 was my choice. The auto TA and EQ worked great in my truck. This unit is hard to beat for the money.
