I installed a Panasonic CQ-CB8901U HU in my Supra. If I turn up the volume it causes the cd to skip when the bass hits. I bought it from Crutchfield and they told me it was a great unit, but the Alpine I had didn't skip at all and it was an older, middle of the line priced Alpine. When I called the techs and asked about the skipping they shook it off as "any HU will skip with the large amount of power you have." Is there anything I can do to eliminate the skipping, or is the Panasonic a "poor' unit? I have 30 days to try it and want opinions so I can send it back and get another brand if I have to. It's mounted very tight (with the rear strap), just like the Alpine was(in the same in-dash kit).

i would get a 2nd visual opinion from an experienced installer, then ship it back if you find nothing, might just be a bum h.u.-shouldn't skip.

We had a couple of panasonic units do that also, we swapped them out and problem solved. If its securely mounted/back strapped etc... then I would send it back.

Considering that it is a Toyota and if it is PROPERLY mounted using the FACTORY radio mounting brackets, it is more than securely mounted. If this is the case, then the unit is bad, send it back for a replacement (like a nice Eclipse).

Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

I contacted Crutchfield and they told me to send it back. They have a new one on the way. I hope this solves my problem. I really wanted the Eclipse unit, but I'm going to try 1 more of these first. It's mounted right, so it's either a defective unit or just a sorry model#.

So did you swap them out for the same model radio, or a more expensive one? Seems they might have a small problem in the manufacturing of their product.

If we had the same model in stock otherwise it was the next model up. They are not the highest quality head unit so I am willing to say they probably are a little less on the QC side of things.

Well, the second Panasonic did the same exact way that the first one did. Very bad skipping when the bass hits. They are sending me an Alpine CDA-9885 today. I sure hope this solves my problem. No more Panasonics for me ever, if the Alpine works out.

Thanx. Yeah, I love my 9830. What model do you have? I think my 9830 is an 04' model.

I've never seen cooling fans on HU's before. I was actually new to the mobile audio scene when I got it 2yrs ago and I was amazed by the features, for $250! Awesome! HP/LP, cooling fan, time delay, 4 band parametric, motorized face. I never thought an Alpine would be so packed for so inexpensive.

I do have a q regarding Alpines. What is the Stable/Mid(or whatever)/HiFi settings for? I used to keep it on Stable but noticed a huge SQ improvement in FM reception when I changed it to HiFi. Evidently HiFi sounds better but what are these settings actually for? Does the Stable setting incorporate more protection features or something?

I've got the 9885. I love how it performs. And especially the direct I-pod connection. Sorry, I can't help with the Hi-Fi/Stable question.

Yours must be newer than mine. Does it have a cooling fan? Anyone else have a HU w/ a cooling fan? I thought it would add noise but by grounding HU and running bigger power wire eliminates even the possibility...

Anyone else have a HU w/ cooling fan?

Anyone know what the stable/hifi settings on my 9830 are?

Yeah, thanks supradude

My Panasonic has been doing the exact same thing. I'm replacing it with an Eclipse as soon as the tax return gets here.

I wonder if fans will help with those 2 and 3Ohm speakers!
