I want to build a box that is small yet reaps huge output. I was thinking to build a sealed box according to Kickers' specs' and face the speakers up. What I want to do is use a piece of plywood the same dimensions as the top board (where the speakers are mounted) and use 2" risers to hold the board parallel to the top of the box, on the top. I will call this a 'dispersion' board. I'm thinking that this would have the same effect as facing the speakers down but without having to worry about the speakers being too saggy. This would also deter thieves as the 'dispersion' board will be bolted to the box- thieves can't get to speakers.

What do you think of this design?

If your idea of firing upwards is to keep sag factor out of the equation, and if sag is indeed a factor with this sub, you're out of luck.  Sag factor applies to both up- and down-firing.  Gravity works against it either way.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Dang. Yes, that factor of Sag is what I was trying to get around. -Alright I have a question. Is the Sag such a major concern if the area air has to escape (from the front of the cone) sort-of restricts how 'easily' the speaker moves (I am under the impression that this is why too-saggy speakers fail while downfiring)?

Doesn't matter if the box is in a dual reflex bandpass box.

Gravity affects EVERYTHING...you can't change the law of gravity

So this design would be loud but damaging to the speakers?

Your design is exactly what I was going to try next for more output. I have my subs up firing, in a sealed box. Was thinking of mounting 3/8 or 1/2 Plexiglas, or something that would reflect the sound real well.

Has anyone done this before and pushed power to the subs? Right now I have 3 subs downfiring and love the ouput from 250wrms to each. They are KickerComp 10's and 1 RF P1. Is the fact that they are stitched the only thing saving them? I am really considering doing this for SPL and sub 'security'.

Anyone?

Once it warms up ima build this for a couple 25 dollar subs and see how they do

This is basically my setup now only the subs are facing straight down and the 'open' side of the bottom is facing the rear and not the sides. I'm very impressed in the performance. The bass is much louder and more accurate.

If the thieves get your box, they'll get to the speakers. I think what you meant to say was, what they don't see, they won't know to steal.

As far as the sag thing goes, I think there is a calculator on this site that may help determine whether your speakers will work for this type of application. Maybe you already tried this, but you didn't post it.

3) It has 8 times the physical coupling to the vehicle with over 1 lb per square inch verses the normal 0.13 lb per square inch of a normal box.

In other words, it has 8 times less footprint than a regular flat-bottomed box of the same dimensions.  So the weight is distributed in a smaller area.  But, how does that improve physical coupling to the vehicle?  Both boxes would have exactly the same weight physically coupled to the vehicle.  I don't get the physics of why narrowing that weight into two strips will transfer bass to the vehicle better.

Methinks they were really groping for superlatives with those three reasons.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."
