head unit display is fine, but no sound?

I have an alpine DEH-8500MP in a 99 Acura TL. It's been working fine for years, but when I started the car today no sound comes out of it. Everything on the display seems fine, I can take out the CD and put in new ones, but there is no audio (not even hiss /static). Is there an easy way to check what might have gone wrong, or do I need to be rip open the dash and go from there?

    It looks as though you have a Pioneer deck. Are you using the speaker output wires of the deck or do you have amplifiers on your system? If amps you need to make sure they are turning on. If no amps the output IC's on those decks are very sensitive and will go out if the speaker wires touch another wire or ground, even for a split second.

I'm not running an aftermarket amp. From what I understand the stock head unit sends the signal out to an EQ, which then comes back to the head unit and out to the speakers. I would guess then that my aftermarket head unit is hooked up directly to the speakers. It's always a pain to try and get to the back of the head unit (I don't have that special pioneer removal tool), but is my best bet just hooking a multimeter up to the output of the head unit and seeing what it shows? I also the head unit's sub out connected to subs in the trunk, but I got in an accident recently and the body shop did something that made my sub amp stop working (I think they probably messed up the ground wire), so I can't check to see if that's working...

Just did some research, the head unit is definitely directly connected to the speakers, so I'm guessing the head unit is just dead. Time to buy a new one I guess...
