Hi,

I have a JL Prowedge with 2 12 inch w6's in it with a JL 1000/1 amp and an alpine headunit. On december first I was rear ended which threw the sub against the wall of the trunk. It was in a buick lesabre but when I reintalled everything in my new toyota camry I am no longer impressed with this sub system which leads me to believe the subs are damaged.  Before the accident I was always blown away by the output but now even with all the settings maxed it it justs sounds alright.  I mean it still hits hard but I don't hear that rich full sound I used to hear. Is it possible that they can be damaged but still work?  Thanks

While I won't say it is impossible that the subs were damaged in the accident, it is unlikely.

Obviosly if there was any physical damage to the cone..you would see it, to check the spyder assemble you will need to remove the subs and view it from the rear. Most likely the problem is either the subs are wired out of phase and/or the acoustics, shape, materials etc. of this vehicle are not as condusive to low frequency output as the last car.

If the woofers are facing back the output should be decent enough..however you will need to check the electrical phasing of the subs, if you don't know how simply disconnect just one of the subs..if the bass increases they are out of phase. Reverse the wire you disconnected and all should be fine again.

Good luck and keep posted on the results.

I have never opened the sub box so its not wired out of phase. Maybe its just the car because its a lot quieter than the last car but is there anything I can do to make it louder? like a ported box or something? Thanks

If you are running two SETS of wires from the amp to two sets of terminals on the box, it is absolutely possible that one of them is out of phase. Does the box only have one set of terminals? If no, try the phasing suggestion again.

As I was typing that, I thought that it is ALSO possible that one wire has come disconnected from ONE of your woofers (or possibly one voice coil). If this happened, it is possible that the enclosure is now acting as a mis-tuned PR system, with the second woofer being the PR. Both would still move if it is a common chamber enclosure, but you would cetainly NOT get the proper output... Remove the woofers, and make certain they are all connected still.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

Theres only one set of terminals but thats a good point about one of the voice coils being disconnected ill open up the box and take a look. THanks

Just opened up the box and everything is connected.

Did the back seat of the wrecked car fold down? If so, did you listen to music w/ it down? Does the new car's back seat fold down. This can* make a huge difference on how loud the car can get.

*not always though

2-12w6's with 1000w should really be slamming. If the subs and amp survived the accident and wiRED / installed correctly the vehicle might be the culprit.

As the last post states if the seats fold down you should be getting plenty of bass. If they don't fold down I have found on some vehicles that bass can get trapped in the trunk due to the way the vehicle is built. To overcome it if this is the case you may need to cut metal from behind the seat area, the rear deck and perhaps remove some sound deadening insulation as well, it just depends on the vehicle.

If the bass is getting trapped in the trunk it should be obvious, also as I stated earlier try having the subs enclosure facing to the rear if it is not already..that will usually give a percieved bass increase to the listening compartment due to the large size of the sound wave at lower frequencies..it is actually longer then the interior so this gives the wave more room to oversimplify.

If none of these suggestions apply to you a ported box might do the trick..more output at lower frequencies with the same power, it can't hurt as long as the enclosure is ported correctly for the subs.

The subs are facing the rear but those back seats are thick as hell and have metal backing, I think the bass is getting trapped in the trunk.

Well there ya go..you have "mercedes trunk syndrome" in your toyota. All I can suggest is start cutting and ripping. But unlike some benzes, at least you don't have a gas tank mounted vertically behind the rear seat.

If the car is a lease make sure you can hide what you hack. If not then it's your discretion. I wish I had a trunk to cut, it's one of my favs.

Another option if you so choose is a bandpass box.  Have the 2 -12's firing into a single cavity and cut the port through the rear deck. This way ALL the bass goes into the interior. Either way you get to cut...lucky.

I thinking about removing the stock rear speakers to let the bass flow into the car and also because I think pressurized trunk is messing with the rear speakers.  I'll probably just get really good set of JL components and an amp for the front speakers.

Cool, if removing the rear speakers make enough improvement, you know you're onto something. Good Luck.
