I am trying to install an aftermarket cd player. After going to the third store to find a harness kit, the guy tells me that I need this pretty massive $60.00 kit that comes with a replacement speaker and a ton of other stuff. He says that several systems wont work if I don't use it. Is there a workaround for this? The car doesn't even have most of the systems that would be affected. The door chime is not a big deal, but is there an issue with the air bags? Thanks! Dave F.

There is no issue with changing the radio except that you loose your door chime and keyless programing. I've installed tons of radio into these new GM's with no problems.

CHeck to see if you even require the radio relocation harness. To do so, open your door with the key in the ignition and listen to where the door chime is coming from. If the chime is coming from the speaker, then you have the system they are referring to. If the door chime is coming from the upper dash area, then you do not have this system and you will require a normal wiring harness.

Hi, thanks for the quick response. When I tried to connect it using the wiring kit I get no main power. The diagrams from this site call for the switched power to be yellow on the existing plug. There's only one hot wire, even with the switch on. It's an orange wire, and there is no yellow.....

Check out this site. It explains all you need to know about the 2000+ GMs https://members.shaw.ca/johnz24/howto/2kaudio.html The relocation kit is BS and not needed. You will only lose your chimes. Only other problem is that you need to find a switched 12V wire I believe. You can tap into the wiper fuse I think. The site explains everything, so check it out. Dan

I've done tons of thoes cars and all you need to do is run a wire from the ignition harness to get acc. However, I have talked to metra's techs and supposedly you may run into an airbag problem later on down the road if you dont use the radio relocation harness.... I've personally never ran into a prbolem by not using that harness, but better safe than sorry. And you can pick up that harness at Fry's Electronics for 30.00, tell that shop to go fly a kite if they think the can sell it for 60.00.

There is no switched power available at the radio. There's a thick brown wire coming from the steering column---you can likely find it more easily somewhere else under the dash----attach a fused lead to it, and run it to your radio. There is switched power available at the climate controls, which are very easy to access---but it is ignition-switched power; the radio won't work in the Accessory position if you use this.
