question regarding the proper way to rout the power cable to the passenger compartment.

is there one tried and true way of doing this? i have heard of different methods.

what is the method you use? through the firewall? under the vehicle?

or does it depend on the vehicle in question?

It depends on the vehicle in question. The main rule of thumb is to make sure that you route the RCA wires away from power wires to reduce the inducement of noise into the stereo system.

You can do either. If you run it under the vehicle make damn sure that it won't get snagged on anything and tie it down very well, there is a risk involved. Firewall is much safer, but it can be a major pain in the ass. I'd say try the firewall first. You might be able to run it through an existing gromet which makes it easier.

Yea hellbass is right on here, always look for a grommet for an unused factory installed option...  many cars have a large empty grommet just sitting somewhere under the firewall waiting to be exploited.

I would seriously avoid doing under vehicle-wire-runs.  I've seen all kinds of weird stuff... from branches caught up in the wire to straight severed 4-gauge.  Be very wary of this.

Never run cables under a vehicle, it's the worst enviornment for them.  If you can't find a factory grommet to run the power cable through from the battery, then find an open area on the lower part of the fire wall and drill a hole.  Be sure to check the area behind where you will be drilling before you drill!  I like to use a punch for two reasons.  First, it leaves no question on where the drill bit will be comming out on the other side, and second, it keeps the drill bit from "walking".  Drill a hole larger than your power cable, just big enough for the rubber grommet that is being installed.  Hope this helps.

the best idea to me is still running it through the firewall. I have done that running the cable under the car thing for a while and found out it was shorting out the circuit breaker for my air compressor. so i ran it through the cab and then out through the bed and whoola now more blown fuses or circuit breakers. so run it throught the firewall.

I've had good luck running through the e-brake cable grommet in the firewall.
