The car's a 1997 Geo Metro. It's still got the stock speakers. The head unit is an Alpine CDE-9843. I just installed an amp, the Dual XIA1000 which is being used to drive a pair of Kenwood KFC-W2511's. It sounds awesome, but my friend's roommate says that a crossover would make it sound even better. I'm assuming that it'd work by preventing the really low frequency sounds that the subs produce from going into the rest of the speakers. Problem is, I have no idea what kind to look for. I've got a 1/2 Din space under the head unit so if I can find something that can fit under there, it'll make the center console look a little more complete. I was looking at the Clarion EQS746, it looks like it'll fit and I think it'll do what I need it to do, but I don't really understand what the features mean.

That amp should have a low pass crossover built into it. Don't waste your money on eq's and crossovers like that. If your amp doesn't have a crossover built in I would recommend stepping up the cd-player to one with the crossovers built in.

The amp has a dial with 40Hz on one end and 200Hz on the other. I'm just worried about frying the other speakers in the car if I turn up the cd player too loud, before I put the amp and the subs in, I'd sometimes get a bunch of distortion from the speakers.

Honestly I would sell your deck and upgrade to a unit with built in crossovers, you will be much more pleased in the end.

A new deck? I'm looking at a dvd player for my other car, and moving the head unit in that one into the Metro. It's a Dual XDMR7710, it's got like 6 or 7 selectable equalizer curves. I'm not sure if that's the same or what but it'd be really nice if I didn't have to get new head units for both of them.
