Hey guys,
New to the forum, looking for info on how to install a new HU in a 1997 Chevy Cavalier without trashing my dash. If anyone knows how it would be a great help.
Thanks

I might be of some help. I have a 2002 cavalier. I have not seen the dash of a 97 though, but can someone tell me if they are the same setup (as in apperence from the outside). If someone tells me that, then I will be able to help you out easily.

I had a 99 cavalier and I can say I had to remove the whole dash to get to the stereo. the screw were all located on the bottom side of dash and like two inside the glove box. also if it had an airbag(which mine did) the access to the two screws for it was located inside the glove box..had to use long extension to reach them bolts.
well hope this helps some.

If the dash on the 97 cavalier is the same as on the 02 cavalier, then this is what you need to do.... You need to take the screw out the holds the air defroster vent thats in the front center at the windshield. That then pulls right out with alittle force. Pull off the 2 side covers located at each door hinge. Their are atleast 2 screws under those covers that need to come out. Open the glove box and look up under the lip under the top of the dash. There is like 3-4 screws there that need to come out. if your car has the airbags, then there is 2 more screws located behind the glove box. You will see those with the glove box opened. There will be a hole in the top of the glovebox where you can get to those screws. After those are all removed, the top half of the dash can be lifted off. There will some snaps that hold it in place but It will come off with alittle force. After that is off, look at the top edge of the front dash cover. There will be screws there ( 3 I think) that holds that in place. After those are out, you can then pull that straight out. There will be snaps holding that still so use some force. You will need to disconnect the plugs to any switches that are attached to that piece (cig lighter for instance). If you have problems getting the dash cover off still, simple take the 3 screws off that hold the steering column cover in place. Those 3 screws are located underneath. That top half simply pulls off then. After that is all off, all that is left is some screws to hold the radio in place. Hope this helps you.
