Hello
I have a set of fosgate rca cables that are brand new. Bought them a few years ago but never used them. The cables have a wire running in between the left and right inputs. I am not sure what the purpose of this wire is ? I would like to use these cables in a new install . Does this wire serve any purpose to improve the audio output of the system? Thanks.:errr:
That's the turn-on lead going from your head-unit to your amplifier. It provides the signal that indicates to the amplifier when to turn on and off.

I kinda thought thats what it was used for but was unsure. I also thought
that may be it could be some sort of noise cancelling ground for the cables.
Thanks much appreciated.
Well, this wire is supposed to be the remote wire, but why run a 12v wire right next to the rca's? You shouldn't. You should, however, ground this out like you mentioned.
I had a similar question before. I found out that i was getting noise from using it as a remote wire. I then grounded it (ran new remote wire obviously) and found that the noise vanished.

This is NOT a remote-turn on wire which most people think...It is to ground the head unit to the amp.

I believe you; I think you have more experience than I have.
Just one question: would you only use this ground wire if the car's standard wiring harness doesn't supply a proper ground? I always though a ground connection should be made as close as possible to the device.

No, the wire is there to combat engine noise if it present.

It's not a remote turn on, it's to help eliminate ground noise in the event that ground noise is present. Note, that it is not a ground wire--you still need to run a heavy guage ground wire to your amp. This wire will (in theory) help to lessen/eliminate ground noise if there is ground noise.
Cannot totally agree here.In order to eliminate noise this wire would have to be connected to the RCAs shield ground which it is not. Plus we've already had long discussions on this board how running 12 volts DC next to RCAs cannot cause noise. I sell a very cheap brand of RCAs at entry level that says on the package"amplifier remote turn on lead" and I have never had any engine noise when using it.

There is no such thing as free installation!

You go, boy! I mean... Bob!
The wire COULD be used for either. I have never had ANY issue using it as a remote lead, there isn't enough current EVER being carried on it to make a field big enough to cause noise, even if it did anyway, which, as Bob has already said, it doesn't. If using it as a ground (and as far as I am concerned) it's generally too small to do any good anyway... not enough current carrying capacity because the gauge is FAR too small, and the resistance is generally too high. I personally would simply disregard it completely if I didn't use it for the remote lead.
There's MY take on it.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."
