I am a newby regarding system design. I have a 1986 Honda CRX and would like to upgrade my system and am limited to about $300. I listen mostly to rock and blues. Here is what I have:
head-clarion DRB5176
amp-crossfire CFA142 (35W x 4ohm or 70W x 2ohm)
front speakers in doors-Polk 4 1/2 inch ES or EX series (I forget)
rear speakers in 3.3 cu\ft sealed plywood box built into rear of cargo area-Pioneer TSA6956 (6 x 9's)
The amp is wired to all 4 speakers (4 ohm's each) giving me 2 ohm's x channel. I have no way of balancing front/rear volume. The front speakers produce no base and very little mid and highs. The rears produce very good sound overall but I still want more low bass. About 80% of all sound comes from the rear, I don't like that. What I want is more sound up front with more low and mid bass from the rear. If I remove the 6 x 9's I can use them in my other car.
What I thought would work is : replace the 6 x 9's with 2- 8" subs powered by a new amp, fit infinity kappa 5 1/4 or 6" in doors powered by old amp. To do this I would need to split my rca outputs from the head unit, can I do this with a rca Y adaptor? Would I get adequate sound range and volume from the doors? Should I use Bass blockers in the doors? What is enough power to get good clean sound in the front. What is enough power for the subs? What speakers/amp/subs/combination do you recommend?
what you are planning to do sounds good...Kappa 6s will give you alot more sound and volume than the Polks, so you shouldnt worry about up front sound that way...are you planning on buying a component set or just co-axs? I would avoid the bassblockers because I dont feel they would be necessary...
using a Y will work for dividing your signal, but I dont think you will achieve front/rear separation by doing it that way...but by running separate amps you can play with the gains a bit and turn the fronts or subs up or down that way...
as far as your budget for this project, I would personally save a bit more or buy used so you can get better brands than 300 would get you new...I am unsure of American pricing on many of the entry level brands, so someone else may be able to give you more accurate suggestions, but for what you are looking for, MTX 6000s sound OK, Kicker CompVRs arent bad subs, but I have never really looked at 8s so someone else may be able to point out some other suggestions there too...
