inverted sub

I have 2 10 inch PowerBass S series subs in a ported subzone box. I want to invert them but they have that mounting ring that hides most of the mounting screws. Do I just drill through the ring to mount all 8 screws or just use the 4 that are visible??

As far as the phase, I'm kinda new to car audio so you'll have to help me out with this one. What do you mean be reversing the phase?? the subs are just inverted. How does this affect the sound??

How are you using 8 screws right now, if there are only 4 holes? If you are using 8 screws, there has to be a hole for each, right? I guess I lust a little bit lost, based on your description... If it is a solid decorative mounting ring, with only 4 screws visible, and there are 4 screws hidden underneath it, invert the sub, but don't use the mounting ring, just put all 8 screws in.

It won't really affect the sound, noticeably. Some systems might even sound better (as far as mid-bass integration) with the wires left connected as they are, but the woofers inverted. Reversing the phase simply means putting the positive speaker wire on the woofer's negative terminal, and vice-versa. You must do that with BOTH woofers, or you will cancel all of the output, and you'll effectively have nothing to hear.

You want to screw just the sub down first, with 4 screws. The ones opposite of the ones on the trim ring. Then  you screw down the trim ring. The sub will still be held down with 8 screws, only 4 you can't see.

Well, I inverted one of my tens to see if it would work and the only thing I'm worried about is the sub surround hitting the edges of the mounting hole. Is this a problem or will my subs be fine?? Lining the sub with the edges was a pain, so I thought I would check before I did both tens. Make sense??

Makes perfe4ct sense, and NO, you DON'T want them to touch... it can eventually wear through the surround, if the touch/wear is bad enough. Foam surrounds will go away MUCH fadter than a rubber or butyl surround, so if you have foam surrounds, make ABSOLUTELY certain you are aligned. Alignment will be very important, but if you use the screw holes that were used BEFORE, you shuld be ok.

If I can take off the rubber trim ring around my sub, do you think that would help with the alignment issue?? I really think inverting my subs would improve the bass response. My friend has 2-12in Alpine Type-S subs inverted in a sealed box and the f**kin pound to high heaven.

It wont... there will be NO DIFFERENCE!!! The box volume MIGHT be a little bit bigger, which MAY allow a little bit deeper response,(and I DO MEAN MAY!!!) but the front of the cone is the SAME as the back of the cone, in regards to output. The only thing different is the appearance.

You are comparing two different woofers, in two different applications, with different supporting electronics... TOTALLY different. Your friend's stuff DOES NOT POUND BECAUSE THE WOOFERS ARE INVERTED!!! Let me say that again! Your friend's stuff DOES NOT POUND BECAUSE THE WOOFERS ARE INVERTED!!!

If that's what you are after, you're wasting your time, and risking damage to the surround on your woofers... Forget it,man...

Is it possible to take the front piece of the box off and mount the subs inside inverted cuz I think the front piece unscrews and can be removed. What if I mounted them inverted inside the box?? would this work??

Huh? Inverted inside the box? That's regular mounting... Either that, or I'm completely lost in what you are trying to do, here...

heamphyst, he's talking about mounting it normal through the top piece, then flipping the top piece over.

To the OP, if the front piece can be removed and mounts the same when you flip it over, then yes it would be possible.
