I am hooking up a JL Audio 500/1 and a 300/4 to push 2 12w3v2-d4's and XR series components in a 2001 Chevy Silverado Extended cab.  I also have a 1 farad cap and a 4 gauge to 4-8 gauge distribution block..  i know what i like, but i need to wire it up...  never played with a cap before.   I currently have 8 gauge power and ground running in my vehicle. Do i need to beef it up to 4 gauge or 0/1?  not planning on going any higher unless i get into competition.

I would upgrade to a 2 ga power wire to the cap and then to the distro block, with 4 ga to the 500/1 and 8 ga to the 300/4.  Caps a pretty easy to connect,  just make sure you charge it first.
