If you lose or dont have the original resistor that came with your capacitor or someone brings you one to install is there a resistor value that you can substitute for it that works with basically all caps?

A test light. Put it inline wherever you WOULD have put the resistor, (at the battery end, at the cap... wherever) and when it goes out, you can connect it up permanently.

NO    it needs to be an old fashioned test light with an incandescent bulb.
