My buddy bought a "Precision Interface Electronics GM12-AUX
Connect a portable music player, satellite radio tuner, or DVD player to your factory GM receiver!" to hook up his XM to his factory headunit.. He said he broke off his 4x4 knob trying to install it himself.

He's going to bring it over to me tonight to install. Figured I'd get a heads up before I got the vehicle.. How do you get the head unit out?

Thanks much.

there are 2 phillips screws above the gauge cluster

1 screw to the left of the cigarette lighter socket

pull off the panel below the steering column by removing a couple screws down low

pull out 3 more philips screws after removing that panel

then pull the dash piece off partway.  from behind you can push out the 4x4 controller or just unplug it.  you can also unplug or remove the rear window wiper switch at the same time.  unplug the ligher connections down low

also pull out the light switch assembly on the left side of the dash, it clips in from behind.

after all that, the dash should be free to pull off, you have to wiggle it around the steering column and top of the dash, but its not that difficult.
