Well today I brought a new Pioneer headunit to replace the old cassette deck in my 1993 Subaru Impreza, I managed to get it all wired up and running. It goes well, until you turn the volume control past a certin point, at this point the unit shuts off and will not turn back on. I checked the wiring, and it has blown a 2A fuse, (the one thats in line)...I replaced the fuse, cranked up the volume one more, and it just blew again....Ive never wired an audio system before and was pretty pleased that i got to even produce sound, but now im pretty gutted that its got this problem....I am usint the crappy speakers that came with the car in 1993, but am not shure if this is the problem. Any help greatly appericated. Thanks KANE

Either you have an a bad speaker, which will shut a deck down, or you have a lousy ground. Did you happen to use a wire harness? -------------

Yer the speakers are really old, but they do produce ok sound to this point when they shut down. I have tried numerous grounds, but neither have been right on the chassis. It was pretty confusing trying to wire it up, the car only has two front door speakers(and has only ever had two), but wires for four speakers(front and rear) were running into a single plug into the back of the old head unit, so seeing as though it only has fronts i only wired the front wires into the new one. And when i drive my car with the blown fuse it hardly idles for some reason...very annoying.

The internal amplifier of your Pioneer radio gets it's power from the yellow wire. It is not uncommon for these units to pull upwards of 6 or 7 amps of current. How big is the wire with the inline fuse holder? And is it a factory installed wire?

its a factory wire....im not shure what size it is....I had a look in my pioneer book and it says the head units max current draw is 10.0A, so cant i just up the fuse in the fuse holder?

Is the wire is the same size or larger than the yellow wire of your radio?? If the wire is smaller than the yellow wire you may have to run a large enough wire to the positive terminal of your battery. Remember to put a fuse holder with a 10 amp fuse at the battery.

The yellow wire with the fuse holder is the same size as all the other wires going into the stereo... I put a 10 amp fuse in the holder, and it doesnt blow the fuse anymore...But iz it safe to do this? The unit itself only draws a max of 10 amps. I can now turn the volume up till i get static, with the 2A fuse, as soon as it got just a little static it would blow. And should i be sweet to stick in some 5" door speakers, 2 6x9's, and 2 12" subs with a amp, and crank it loud?

How many speakers do you have connected to the radio now? As long as you have 1 speaker on each set of speaker wires of the radio you will be fine. The subs that are connected to the amp will not affect current draw of your radio. All will be fine.

I have two speakers, both of which are wired in to the unit. There was another thing i noticed tonight when i was driving, that is when its turned up the screen dims on the unit as do my dash lights...so it must be drawing a bit from my battery.

Sounds like you need to run the wire to your battery. It needs to be 12 or 14 Ga. And remember you need to put a fuse holder and a 10 amp fuse at the battery. The fuse holder located at the battery is very important.

The following is assuming your battery is in the engine compartment. First thing you need to do before doing this or any other project on your car is to disconnect the negative terminal of your battery. Get a piece of 12 guage wire, long enough to reach from the back of your radio to the positive terminal of your battery. Get a fuse holder and a 10 amp fuse also. Connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal of your battery. Do not put the fuse in the holder till the end of the job. Connect the wire to the other end of the fuse holder. Route the wire toward the firewall of the car. Look for other wires going that way and tie wrap the wire to the existing bundle of wires. When you get to the firewall, you need to find a place for the wire to go into the car. If the harness you ran the wire with goes into the body of the car, you can try to go in with it. You will need to poke a hole through the grommet that the bundle of wires go through. Do not use a knife or anythig that could strip insulation off of the wires in the bundle. A #1 phillips screwdriver works good in a lot of cases. Do not force it through anything other than the rubber of the grommet. You need to look inside the car where the bundle comes in and make sure you are not going to shove the screwdriver through the bundle of wires. Remove the screwdriver and insert the wire through the hole you just made. Go under the dash inside the car and pull the wire through till you have all of the slack out of it. You then need to be careful not to run the wire where it will interfere with the brake, clutch, accellerator, or the steering linkage. Run it to the radio and connect it to the yellow wire of the radio. Take the wire that had the 2 amp fuse in it and you need to tape the end of it so it will not be able to ground out. Leave the fuse out of it as an extra precaution. Now we can put the fuse in the fuse holder at the battery, and you should be ready to go.
