I was told by my local installer that there is a part that I will need when installing a new radio in my 2000 Pontiac Sunfire. I have the radio (I bought off a friend) and thought all i would need is a dash kit to put it in. Starting in 2000 GM put a lot of the features of the car (like the door chime etc...) through the car radio. Is there anyway to go around getting this other part? Or is there a way to buy them off the internet a lot cheaper than the $150.00 the installer wants to charge me? Any help would be great!!
Thanks,
xl72

You will need a dash kit as mentioned, antenna adapter and the harness. $150 seems a bit steep, we retail the gmrc0-1 for $80. A professional establishment will not install it without the interface harness.

If you want to be cheap, you can buy the Metra 70-2003 wire harness and use that instead of the gmrc-01, but your door chime will not work.

In Canada we are bound to a different set of rules. It is illegal for us to remove the capabilities of the class II databus circuit. The chime module on this circuit is classified as a safety device by Transport Canada. You do indeed need the GMRC01 or the cheaper head unit relocation kit to keep the class II databus circuit intact.

Why is it classified as a safety device?  Does it control anything other than the door chime on that car?
