Does anyone know the benefits of a shorting ring on a subwoofer?

They reduce the inductance of the voice coil and can help reduce harmonic distortion.

thanks for the reply, so would you say this is a feature usually reserved for higher end speakers?

It does cost more for a manufacturer to use them.  A well-designed speaker that needs them should have them, but their presence does not necessarily indicate the speaker is "high end."

Im guessing that this is something that is put into a speaker during the designing phase?   Its not something you can purchase and just add to any speaker is it?  Since Im not familiar with these, my last questions are how does it reduce inductance, and where would it typicaly be found in the speaker.

It is indeed designed into the speaker. It is an internal piece, placed at the top if the pole piece within the voice-coil. No, it's not possible to just "add one on".

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."
