I'm a freakin' newb... Hey there guys! I have a center channel speaker that needs power. My Kenwood DNX-7100 isn't 5.1 channel sound unfortunately. I have a small amp that is designed for home use, Sonic Impact if you’re familiar. It runs off 12 volt power like the rest of my A/V equipment but is designed for home use and uses a wall AC adapter. If I find a 12V AC wall adapter, can I just chop off the adapter and connect the power and ground to my distribution blocks to power the amp? How can I identify the power and ground wires without a volt meter? Sometimes the cords on those things have one side with a white line down it, is that the ground? Thanks guys!

wait up... is it 12volt ac, or 12 volt dc power required by the amp? BIG difference! sometimes + and - are identified in a diagram on the wall adapter itself. but you can test it using a digital multi meter (mine has a little - sign that comes up on the screen indicating reversed polarity. get back with more specific info for a full answer to your question.

The amp calls for an AC adapter. I have an AC adapter and on the back it says Class 2 transformer Input: 120v 60Hz 6W Output: DC12V 200mA. The amp also has a cigarette adaptor accessory that allows you to plug it in and use it in your car. Does that help? Thanks!

I have a clarion dedicated 12 volt center channel amp (50 watts) in my box, you wanna buy it?

I'm familiar with the Sonic Impact class T amplifiers. The standard amp is 5 watts stereo and the "super" is 15 watts stereo. Yes, it can be used in a vehicle using the cigarette lighter adapter, but I am not sure how well it might work for your application, although they will support a 4-ohm load on each channel. Also, there is a lot more to adding a center channel than powering a speaker and sticking it in your dash. Do you have a center channel processor to drive it? (Something like the Clarion unit dwarren mentions above has the processor built in.) ------------- Support the12volt.com

yes, good point. getting the right sound to the center channel can be just as important as HOW you power it. however, i have played around several times by just adding a small pair of plates running stereo in the center of the console and it did add some deph to the sound of the car, but not the same as a true 5.1imaging. i also had 30-40 watts going to them to hear them.
