2000 4runner stereo

I made the mistake of trying to install an after-market stereo in my girlfriend's 2000 Toyota 4Runner without using the factory wiring harness and an adapter, so now all I have to work with is a bunch of different factory wires, and the after-market stereo's wiring harness. The problem is there's more wires on the factory stereo than the after-market's wiring harness.


I can't figure out what it is I need to do to get it to work. I'll try as best as I can to describe my problems.

I used the wiring diagram on this site for all the speakers, and I have power to the stereo, but there's no sound coming out of the speakers. None of the fuses are blown.

On the factory CD player there's a wire that looks exactly like an antenna wire plugged in right next to the antenna, only the wires about half the size of the antenna. Does anyone know what this wire does or if it could be the reason the speakers aren't making sound?

The wires on the after-market stereo is as follows:

yellow - constant 12v
red - switched 12v

black - chassis ground
blue/white - auto antenna relay control

white - front left speaker +
WHITE/ black - front left speaker -

green - rear left speaker +
GREEN/ black - rear left speaker -

gray - front right speaker +
gray/black - front right speaker -

violet - rear right speaker +
violet/black - rear right speaker -




I get no sound out of the speakers when I have all the speaker wires connected the way described by this diagram:

What could be causing the speakers not to work?

If possible, could someone post a wire to wire chart for me to follow? I'll give an example of what I'm looking for:

red - violet
white - violet/black

Did you connect the power antenna wire?   The vehicle may have a factory amp that needs power antenna to turn on.

Look down behind the radio, follow the harness down. There may be a small amp there. Either remove the amp or locate the output harness and bypass the amp. I do Toyotas all day like that.

The smaller antenna is part of the diversity antenna system found in stock systems, just leave it hanging.

Your spare wires are probably amp turn on and illumination

Thanks for the reply. If I remove the amp, will I still have the different wires to work with or am I going to have to do something else to connect the wires?

If you bypass the amp, I would highly suggest you buy the proper harness. It will save time and money. it should be the standard 1761 harness from metra.

But here is what should be at the plug on the other side of the amp if there is one.

I already cut the harness off of the wires that lead to the amp though. Is it still possible to use one? I've only installed stereos into cars that already had crappy aftermarket stuff, so I haven't had to deal with factory stuff.

So can you confirm that there is an amp?

If so, bypass it by locating the output harness, this is where you will find all of speaker leads.

Yeah, there's definitely an amp, I took it out, and looked at the 1761 harness on Amazon, and it looks to be the male end of the harness if I'm seeing the image correctly, and it should be the female end to plug into the wires where the amp used to be.


Or should I only be cutting and splicing the speaker wires while leaving the amp plugged in to power the stereo?


Thanks for your help, I didn't know what I was getting into.

At this point, if you do not want to use the harness, I would locate the speaker wires (bypass the amp) and locate ground, acc, 12 volts, and antenna turn on and hard wire it.

Other wise bring it to my shop, for a minimal fee

Just buy the 70-1761 from your local shop and plug it in past the amplifier.  You'll be very happy that you did!
