It is my understanding that in comparing 1 12 to 1 15 that the 12 would be clearer and the 15 a little distorted. But the 15 can hit all the notes a 12 could, plus sound better on lower ones. True? Both powered at about 800 RMS as they are rated.

No, that's not true. Perhaps your terminology and or definitions used are distorted.  The 15 will play just as well and "clear" as the 12, but with more output given they are the same brand and model with ccomaprable power, and given they are both in the proper enclosure.

The 15 may have more volume or "authority" if you will, at lower frequencies, however this also has a trade off, such as it may not be as loud as the 12 at higher sub frequencies.

I use 15's and like them just fine, the reality of it is using a proper enclosure matched to a good quality speaker will make all the difference.

My 18 hits just as fast and as "clear" and any other 10s and 12s out there...only trade off is that the upper bass rolls off around 60Hz
