I've heard tht if you want to reverse mount, you have to reverse polarity. Does anyone know if this is true? Also, I have a "phase" switch on my amp that has two options, 0degrees and 180degrees. As of right now, it's on 0degrees and sounds fine but I honestly don't know what it does. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well sometimes you may want to run the subs out of phase to time align them with the rest of the system regardless of how they are mounted.
But, to answer your question more specifically, yes, you would typically run them 180degrees out of phase if they are upside down.
However, if you wanted to run a pair of subs with only one sub inverted, run only the inverted sub out of phase.

If you have one woofer mounted in the traditional manner, and a second woofer inverted and mounted to the front of it, yes you would need to wire the outer woofer out of phase.

alright so i don't have to reverse polarity if i switch the phase to 180? nothing will be damaged? does inverting typically change the sound and bass for the better or for the worse? [IMG]https://i14.tinypic.com/4qd8yev.jpg[/IMG] i want to invert the top stage but i have them wired series-parallel. i guess i would only have to switch 2 wires but i like the idea of flipping a switch more.

Nothing will be damaged.
A speaker travels equal distance back and forth.
An easy way to imagine what phasing is would be to start off by correlating it with time.
With that in mind,
put both of your arms straight out. Imagine them representing two sub woofers at rest.
Now, simultaneously lift both your arms up, (say 6" or so whatever), then back down the same distance past center and then back up to center.
You just mimicked a full cycle, the same motion a woofer.... ahh this is getting to complicated, just think of you waving your arms up and down, if one of your arms isnt moving up and down in unison with the other then your arms are out of phase. The further apart they are the further they're out of phase.
If when the left arm is all the way up and the right is all the way down, they are a full 180 degrees out of phase.
Wow, did i just type this, this works better visually, what a ridiculous analogy in reading form.

hah, i appreciate the effort. you probably already answered this but it's kinda hard for me to understand. i have my top stage push by one amp and my bottom stage pushed by another matching amp. if my top subs are invert mounted and my bottom subs are mounted standard, then i change the phase on my top stage, inverted subs to 180 but keep my bottom, standard mounted subs set to 0, everything should be sync'd up?

Yes, the two sets of subs would be in sync. After getting the subs in sync with each other, you will then make sure that the subs are in sync with the rest of the system. Flip both 180 switches and you can make the choice of what sounds best overall. Now, I'll get back to flapping my arms up and down....  ------------- Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.
