When you add a second battery to your car for your sounds, how does that battery get charghed? Or do you have to charge it yourself?

it will be wired in series with your battery under the hood. so, in essence, all batteries added will charge together--as one big battery.

all 12 volt batteries will charge with the alternator make sure u use a fuse from the 1st battery to the second like an anl fuse // or u can do what i have done wich is take 3 6 volt batteries in parrallel for an 18 volt charge ...or 2 8 volt for a 16 volt charge... also if u add a second battery of 12 volts to your system if that battery isnt holding a charge it will also drain your first battery....

why do i do this to myself

I would highly suggest a battery isolator for multi battery applications.

ok, since it's in series, does that mean you have to get a bigger alternator to charge both?

Not necessarily, it is harder on an alternator to charge one overdrawn battery then multiple well charged batteries.  Your alternator needs will be determined by the amount of current your system requires.  Extra batteries will help a factory alternator but they wont solve all of the problems.  Are you sure you need an extra battery?  What does your system consist of?  Answer these questions and more of us will be able to help.

umm you DON'T wire a second batery in SERIES.
you'd get a 24V system, and fry your electrical system.

You wire the batteries in PARALLEL, however, use a battery isolator for 2 batteries.
this allows one battery to be dedicated to the audio eyetem, and one to be dedicated as a cranking/starter battery
both are charged by the alternator, and both systems will use alternator power when the motor is running, but if the audio system battery is depleted, it won't drain the starter battery too.

remember if you need more current, get a bigger alternator. the battery(ies) do nothing when the car is running, except recharge from the alternator.
