Does increasing the port area of a given enclosure always increase the spl output of that enclosure? If this is true, what are the advantages/disadvantages of taking a manufacturers recommended enclosure and adding a bit of port area?

im going to go ahead and say no...but i have been proven wrong before. It shold just change the frequency the port is tuned to.

1: No, changing the port area will have little to nothing to do with SPL of the enclosure.
2: By adding port area, you need to make the port longer to keep the same tuning. This is a disadvantage, as you must make the enclosure larger to allow for the additional volume of the port. The advantage would be this: with a larger port, the speed of the air in the port is slower, which will lower distortion.
A smaller port CAN be shorter, but the air speed in the port is faster, increasing distortion. Generally speaking, you want your air speed to be .05 times the speed of sound or less.
