i have had extensive conversation with people on this site about h.o. alt.'s

i've been searching around for dual alternator kits and i've come up dry.

i found one kit i think its dave's dc electric or something on the internet.  it has a kit with a 160 amp alternator to add on.

i'm looking for some mounting bracket of some kind.  i have no idea how to mount this.  i'll be purchasing in the near future two 150 amp alt.'s.  would it be in my best interest to go to some car shop?  i've had some experience with tooling around in the engine compartment and my dad has too (i'm only 16).  i think i would be able to do it if i had a kit

on the other hand should i just fashion some bracket of some kind on my own?

i can't find anything about this on the net and i won't be looking to pay much over $500 bucks. (if its possible).

any links to any sites that would help me out would be appreciated.  mabye someone who has done this could give me some pointers...thanks guys.

A Dual alt setup for less than $500?  Good luck, but not likely.  Give the guys at Zena a call.  They are dual-alt specialists - but don't expect to hear prices less than $500.

would this be an alternative, paired with a h.o. alt?

is there ANY other alternative to dual alternators?

large power bank thing like the link above paired with a h.o. alternator?

will i have to suck it up and shell out a grand for power to my amps (dual alt.'s + batteries)?

What amps are you trying to power?

i change my mind all the time about what i want but right now its an infinity 1300 watt (rms) monoblock powering a soundstream r1, and a 150 x 2 (rms) channel clif designs amp powering the clif designs qx6500c.

that's roughly 2600 watts not calculating in amp inefficiency.

i think that would be drawing 180.55556 amps. (i used the calculator at 14.4 volts...are you supposed to do 12 volts?) well at 12 volts it would be 216.66667 amps.

so if i was drawing about 217 amps at 12 volts i would need about 300 amps of charging power from an alternator and if i was drawing 14.4 volts i would need about a 260 amp alternator (please correct me if i'm wrong).

and i've asked before but i was wondering if these products would be an alternative to huge alternators (no one has answered me on it...yet).:

PowrCap 400
Stinger 12 volt 55 amp power supply

Hmm, Infinity doesn't make a 1300 watt amplifier.  What's the model number?

A batcap still needs to draw power from somewhere, and that's your alternator.  The stinger device is a battery charger that plugs into the wall.

its an infinity 12lla monoblock, 854 watts at 4 ohms, 1300 watts at 2 ohms.

Infinity 1211a

so i have no other option besides dual alts or one large alternator?
and is a "batcap" that powrcap 400?

i was wondering about that powrcap 400. it says "Rated Discharge for 8 seconds - 400 amps" What does that mean? could this not help me any?

Ah, an older model.  The max current draw by that amplifier is 115 amps (according to the owner's manual.)  I recommend you install a single 200A alternator.  The "powrcap" is just a large capacitor.  I do not recommend using that.

A 200A alt should do ya just fine.  Assuming the vehicle has a good battery, you'll be fine.  Upgrade the big 3 to at least 4 AWG.

got ya. finally some closure...thanks man.

Say i upgraded later to another soundstream r1 subwoofer and another infinity 1300 watt amp. would i need a gigantic alternator/dual alternators? would this change the battery situation? and would it probably be wise to get a small battery like this to help with not draining my battery? (i listen to music alot with the car off)

If you listen with the engine off then yes, a dual battery setup is probably a good idea.  I'd also suggest using a battery isolator or splitter so if you kill your music battery you will still be able to start the vehicle.  Understand of course that an alternator can only supply power when the engine is running...

yeah i understand that.

what about if i upgraded. should i go ahead and get a large/ dual alt setup? could i upgrade later or would it be cheaper in the long run to go ahead and go big.

Oh and would it be possible maybe to run this setup:

just assuming i could find an ultra-easy mounting bracket--mount a high output alternator with my stock alt. but could i leave all my stock stuff as is and run just my amps off this one h.o. alternator? just one main power wire from my h.o. alternator to my amps.
